Lovenox Question Please Answer

I am looking for anyone who has done Lovenox injections during pregnancy. I have just found out that I am pregnant after four years of infertility and several miscarriages. I started Lovenox injections two days again and am having lots of trouble with them. I begin bruising immediatley after giving the injection and each time when I pull the needle out it bleeds at the site. The bruises are extremely tender to the touch and it is even painful to wear pants over the bruises. I have and 5 year old that I had a perfect pregnancy with and now an 8 1/2 month old that we adopted. I can't even sit the baby on my legs. Have any of you had this same experience? I am also on 81 mg/day asprin. Thank you so much.

Hi Keri - how long have you been doing the injections? I found that each one had a "shelf life" of about a week before it would fade. I started to run out of thigh/leg space, and it hurt like a mofo, but eventually space would clear up for another injection. I also found that going in STRAIGHT and quick, with ample skin "pushed up" helped. It's important to NOT push the plunger until the needle is all the way in (hurts less) and to pull the needle out straight and only AFTER all the meds had been delivered. For some reason, the ones my BF did didn't hurt/bruise/bleed as much, go figure. My Dr. had me d/c the baby aspirin once I started the Lovenox, so that sounds different to me. Other than that, it sounds like you're having the typical Lovenox experience - hurts, not fun, but ultimately worth it, right? Good luck, it does get better/easier, at least that was my experience. ~ Marivic, 18w6d

I have only done 2 injections. I am very use to doing injections with all the fertility treatments...but these leave such bad bruises. Are you still doing them or have you quit? They are telling me they want me to do them the entire pregnancy.

Marivic - First, thank you so much for responding. Did your bruises also have swelling ? Mine do. I am using the same technique that you are describing. I really don't notice pain during the injection, it is the painful bruising afterwards that are giving me such trouble. My injection sites begin bruising immediately after the injection. Could my blood be too thin? I am supposed to go into the doctor tom. afternoon for them to look at the bruises and maybe do bloodwork? I am afraid to not do these but I just don't know how I can do this for the entire pregnancy.

Hi Keri, I used lovenox for 2 days after giving birth. I hated it but had no choice because of a blood clot. I wanted to continue nursing my baby. My doctor did some research and put me on Wafarin. It worked great. Are you using Lovenox for a blood Clot? Just wondering....Good luck!!!

In the hospital we push the air bubble out of the syringe to prevent bruising. Maybe ask the Doc if this is ok. Worth a try.

Depending on the dosage, the instructions specifically say to NOT push the air bubble out, as you lose precious medication. I did however, "tap" for bubbles and then get the meds as close to the top as possible. I did get bruising/swelling, but each one only lasted a few days. It's important to resist the urge to "rub" or ma__sage your thighs (this was really hard for me), instead use ice to bring down the swelling. Rubbing just makes the propensity for bruising even worse. I'd definitely ask your Dr. about the baby aspirin though, as they had me stop that as soon as I started the injections (which I'm no longer doing, all my bloodwork came back as "normal" - I'll just be on bloodthinners closer to delivery). Hang in there!

Hi Keri- I am not on Lovenox but i have been doing the heparin injections, starting on day 21 of my cycle and also 81 mg aspirin. I too get easy bruising but mine don't really hurt too bad. I try to wear elastic skirts/pants as much as possible. I only have done then in my stomach fat. I just was dx with a tubal pg on May 27 which ended in surgery and loss of my right tube. So now i am playing the waiting game for AF to arrive so I can get an HSG to see if my left tube is ok, and if it is then we are going to try naturally before IVF. I had 2 prev unexplained miscarriages and 2 tubals I wish you all the luck!
