Clotting How Do They Get Past The Mucus Plug

I am 7 weeks and 4 days pregnant. yesturday I had a sudden gush of bright red blood I was taken to a&e whilst there I had to do a urine sample I passed a clot the size of an adult fist, after that the bleeding stopped. I had a scan this morning and babys fine but there is still a little piece of the clot left inside they said eveything should be fine :) I just cant make out how a clot of that size was able to come out when there is a mucus plug :s where is the mucus plug? surely it couldnt fit past that?
