I have had mirena in for 2.5 years and thank goodness I have not gotten pregnant which after reading the above I feel lucky! I have an appointment to take it out next month because of the side effects. my doctor said there would be none. The swelling, the 40lb rapid weight gain, tender b___sts, scratches on my poor husband, acne which I never had before, pain during s_x its not worth it. There has to be something better! WHEN WILL THERE BE SOMETHING BETTER!!!

dacia~ i know how you feel I am thinking of having it removed cause my husband too cant stand it . s_x for me now is no fun. I have the Mirena IUD since Jan this year and i am having problems too........ I think that I am going to get it removed and go back onthe pill..... much easier for me i am taking daily pills anyways so what is one more?

I don't want to sound like a preacher or a soapbox stander, but, I haven't read one supportive "IUD" post on this topic for those ladies who are genuinely concerned about being pregnant while having an IUD. Soo... OK ladies, I happened upon this website when I did a pregnancy search on Google for my sister-in-law. First I want to say that I have had a Mirena IUD for about 6 months now. I was very hesitant to go through with it, as I am 30, have no children, have a career, and my partner and I don't want any kids. I trust my GYN however with my life, as he has gone through many procedures with me over the last 8+ years. After slight deliberation, and an ecstatic co-worker who had a Paraguard Copper IUD done, I said, Let's do it! (I have a Mirena IUD) Anyhow- the chances of being pregnant after having an IUD inserted are minimal, less than 1%. So for those of you who "think" you may be pregnant, do a home PT or have the Dr. do it- but find out. If you are, you'll have to deal w/it eventually- Thinking you are pregnant and being pregnant are 2 different stories. Before the IUD I used OC's for 10 years- I have many friends who were getting pregnant while on the pill, but, that is becasue of missed pills, or skipped days, etc. I was fortunate to never have become pregnant while on the pill- but I also religiously took mine on time, same time, every day! Nothing but abstinence is 100%! Only the Mirena IUD has hormones that thicken the lining of the uterus to prevent uterine pregnancy, but that does not rule out fallopian tube pregnancy- This can occur if the IUD shifts out of place, and does not properly block the egg from dropping down. However if the IUD was inserted properly, and you were a "candidate" to have one inserted, there really is nothing to fear. I had a scare 2 months ago when I stopped getting the monthly crimson wave, but I took a PT, it was negative, and apparantly I am one of those people who will probably only spot from time to time while having the IUD in place. It is also important that you check the strings on your IUD regularly. You should be able to feel the end of the string just at the top of your cervix, it took some practice in the shower, but eventually I found position in which I could get a "good feel" (it will feel like the end of a fishing wire) I hope all of you ladies do this at least once a month, if not more often- this is how unexpected pregnancies occur, when the IUD shifts. The Mirena IUD has the hormone in it which is released slowly over time, so while your period may be normal for the first few months or years, it can stop altogether eventually. As per my doctor, the main thing to worry about is "checking the strings monthly" (if you cannot locate them, use a backup method until the doc can do a sonogram to check the position of the device), and only be concerned if your period returns heavily after 4-6 months of no period (indication of possible pregnancy) I just hate to see the Mirena get a bad rap- I love being off of the hormonal mood swings and headaches from the pill, and am so happy to not have to pop one everyday. Because I am so young, I am not permitted to have tubal ligation or a partial hysterectomey, so I envy you women who have that option. For me -The IUD is the best option, and so far so good. I've only seen negative posts on this topic, so I am looking forward to reading some positive ones now! Be Well All,

answer for Kim who posted on 6/21- a Paraguard (copper IUD) is good for 10 yrs. approx a Mirena IUD (hormone levonestrogel) is good for 5 yrs. approx

Stephanie - June 22

Shunny ~ Thanks for your concern. I am fine. I started my period a few days a go and am feeling normal. I was just worried because of some of the symptoms I was having that I might be pregnant. Althought most pregnancy symptoms also have some other cause, I just wasn't sure. I always check to make suremy IUD is still there. I Do need to go to the Dr anyway I haven't been in 3 years since I had my IUD put in. Good luck to the rest of you.

kim - June 22

Dee, thanks for answering. Now I need to find out if you can be pregnant with the IUD and still get a period!! Has this happened to anyone?

Shaunny - June 22

good to hear Stephanie. I am getting mine removed (Mirena IUD) the 12th of July.. iam not pregnant either but with us returning back to active status inthe Navy(hubby) iam not wanting to take any chamces at this time and have something go worng with it downthe road........ I want more kids!

niki - June 23

Kim, i had an IUD and got pregnant and still had a period. i dont want to scare you but you should definately have that checked. hope this helps.

Dee - June 23

Kim- How heavy is your period? I bled the first two cycles as usual w/my Mirena IUD, then no bleeding for 3 cycles- BUT.. I had all of the symptoms of a period w/o the actual period. Now I just spot a little around the time of that month. I love the Mirena IUD- It's like extra birth control because of the hormones, without the side effects of the pill. Make sure you check the string regularly too after your period, in the first 9 months it can be expelled and you may not know it. The chances that you would know the IUD expelled itself are probably better if you've never had any children due to the shape of the cervix, but the chances of it expelling are also greater if you never had kids . Do a home PT, and check the string, if it hasn't shifted, and the test is negative, don't stress!!!!

Debra - June 23

To Dacia and Shaunny, If you guys are experiencing painful s_x, then the IUD is not where it should be, and you guys need to have the Doc check the position of it. Furthermore, while mild acne, and cramping are side effects of the Mirena, weight gain is definitely not- -The hormones released by Mirena stay in the vicinity of the s_xual organs, not through the bloodstream. If anything, I have dropped all of the water weight gain I had being on the pill for 10 yrs.
