Hello, I had my mirena iud inserted in November, 2004 and it has almost been a year. I've never been pregnant -couldn't get pregnant. The insertion was painful for about 2 minutes and I had it inserted during a period. I am on this IUD not to prevent pregnancy but for painful periods and endometriosis so as to hopefully stop my periods altogether. My husband and I adopted a little girl almost 3 years ago. Lately I haven't been feeling right and my doctor sent me for a blood test today in case of pregnancy. Since I've never been pregnant, what does it feel like? I would definitely want the baby but would be afraid of losing it. I am 44 years old.

Wow I didn't know that so many people have gotten preg. with the IUD. I have had a 10 year IUD for about 3 years now. I in the last month even though still having normal periods have felt very sick to much stomache and preasure in my bottom area every now and then (not all the time) but when I took a test came back negative. I have don't want another child for I already have 3 boys. It does sound like most of you didnt get the copper IUD. I am a nervous wreck after reading this though. I think i'll give it some time first then take another test.

Carolyn---I'm so glad you got the test done. At least you know now. Have you told your partner? Just wondered. I was one of the ladies who commented on your post last month. I've been thinking about your situation ever since. Are you going to keep it? Don't mean to be nosey...just thinking that I could be in your shoes & what would I do, ya know? Good luck whatever you choose & I hope for your family to be understanding! Best of luck & keep us posted, please!

DRAGONFLY, THANKS FOR ASKING. I STILL AND IN TOTAL SHOCK...BUT AS FOR THE BABY I PLAN TO KEEP IT. MY BOY FRIEND IS STILL HAVING MIXED EMOTIONS AND RIGHT NOW I CAN'T THINK ABOUT HIM. I HAVE TOLD A FEW FRIENDS WHO HAVE BEEN TREMENDOUSLY SUPPORTIVE... I AM GRATEFUL TO HAVE SUCH FRIENDS. THANKS FOR ASKING. I DIDN'T WANT ANYMORE CHILDREN HONESTLY, BUT WILL ACCEPT THIS CHILD AS A BLESSING FROM GOD. AS FOR RYAN I JUST PRAY THAT HE IS THE MAN HE HAS LEAD ME TO BELIEVE HE IS.

Carolyn---You are so brave, really! No matter what your choice would've been. I pray that you'll have the physical strength & emotional support (especially from Ryan) & others around you. There's a great baby site if you need additional help with ideas or names: http://www.talkingbabies.com/2004-baby-boy-name.htm I go on there all the time & it's a cool site to see what others are doing in their pregnant lives. See ya there & congratulations, Hon!

CAROLYN - September 16

DRAGONFLY, I AM NOT BRAVE, NOT AT ALL. I AM SCARED TO DEATH. BUT I FEEL IN MY HEART I MUST DO THE RIGHT THING. I THINK RYAN WILL BE OKAY. MAYBE I NEGLECTED TO TELL YOU THAT WE ARE IN A LONG DISTANCE RELATIONSHIP. HE LIVES IN ALABAMA AND I LIVE IN INDIANA AND I THINK THATS THE BIGGEST PROBLEM WITH ALL THIS. WE HAVE BEEN TRAVELING BACK AND FORTH AT LEAST TWICE A MONTH, BUT THIS PREGANCY ADDS A DIFFERENT TWICE TO THE SENARIO. THANKS.

Carolyn---You may not think you are brave, but to make the decision you have made really is. When one considers giving birth & providing the loving & financial care to another person for the rest of his or her life, that is a decision that takes courage...to do it unexpectedly when you have the choice to end a pregnancy is even more courageous! You could have taken another route that is not easy to decide (abortion) & it would be done and over with, not that there wouldn't have been a long emotional strain on yourself because I honor a person's right to decide what to do with her body, but this is a monumental decision on your behalf because of the children you already have & because it is your decision to make. YOU ARE BRAVE, Honey, & I feel for you either way. It's beautiful, though, that you will be a mother again. That's the way I see it. It may be tough to commute to see him, but that just makes you that much more an upstanding person, in my opinion. Wish I could give you a big e-mail hug! Bless you and your family!

I TOO GOT PREGNANT WITH THE PARAGARD IUD. WASN'T QUITE PREPARED TO EVER HAVE A 4TH CHILD. I AM 29 YRS AND HAVE A 4, 3, AND 1 YR OLD. I AM NOW 8 WKS PREGNANT AND THE BABY IS IN THE UTERUS WHERE IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE. THE ULTRASOUND SHOWED THE BABY TO BE ON ONE SIDE OF THE UTERUS AND THE IUD ON THE OTHER SIDE. MY OB/GYN THOUGHT IT WOULDN'T CAUSE ANY PROBLEMS TO TAKE OUT THE IUD DUE TO ITS LOCATION. BUT WHEN SHE TRIED THE STRING WAS TO FAR UP THAT IT WOULD HAVE CAUSED A MISCARRAIGE IF SHE CONTINUED. AFTER READING SOME POSTINGS WHERE MISCARRAIGES OCCURED AFTER REMOVING THE IUD I FEEL THAT MAYBE LEAVING IT IN WAS THE BEST THING ANYWAYS (IN MY CASE). I HAVE ANOTHER ULTRASOUND AT THE END OF THIS MONTH AND MY DOCTOR IS GOING TO BE KEEPING A CLOSE EYE ON ME. AT THIS POINT SHE THINKS THE IUD WILL BE IMBEDDED IN THE PLACENTA. I AM SO THANKFUL I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE OUT THERE THAT THIS HAPPENED TO! I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR OF MORE OUTCOMES.

christina - September 17

Have you considered getting a 2nd opionion from another OB?I just had my IUD removed last week and it wasnt very difficult, and I know it is usually recommend to have it out ASAP. By the way, have you had any blood work done yet?

Ashley - September 17

Hi ladies. I have been lurking for two days now, couldn't post until now due to computer problems. I too have Mirena for 1 year now on the 28th. I have a 2 year old girl and 1 year old boy. I bled for over 2 solid months when I had mine put in. Then my periods lasted about 5 weeks apiece for a few months and now I am 18 days late. This is not unusual considering my history over the last couple months. I have really thought I was pg several times now. I am so glad I found you all. Good luck to everyone and God Bless.

Stephanie - September 17

Ashley, My situation is just like yours. I also have a two year old girl and my boy will be one in two weeks. I got the mirena put in Dec 1. I bled for almost two and a half months. then i would spot during the month then in April i had nothing till July then it has been for 1 or 2 days and now I have been showing signs of pregnancy. I have taken two test both negative. I am getting my mirena taken out in oct. If i am going to get pregnant i want to be on a birth control I can have more control of. I really don't think these things are all good as what people say. good luck stay in touch.

Wow. I thought this was supposed to be a rare thing. I got my copper IUD 4 years ago after an unexpected pregnancy of twin boys. Felling a little large lately, and I dont really keep track of my periods because I have an IUD! And its supposed to be 99% effective. Anyway, got this crazy idea that I might be pregnant, and I took two hpt last night- both positive, so I thought they must be wrong -since I have an IUD of course- so I went back out and got 2 more, a different brand. I cannot belive that they all said I am pregnant. I will se my DR. monday, and I somehow still think he is going to say the tests were wrong. I am 32, 3 kids already- and another concern is that I had an xray gone of my torso last week. I dont know what kind of damage that can do to a fetus, but I know they always ask yo if there is any possibility that you maight be pregnant before they turn the thing on. What kind of complications can occur if the IUD remains in throughout the pregnancy? It sounds like miscarrage is the big factor if its removed. Gosh, I am so freaked out. I have sooo many questions for the Dr. Thanks Ladies Kim

Ashley - September 18

It has come as a real shocker to me too that all of these ladies are becoming pg, when I was under the impression that I had virtually no chance of pregnancy until the iud is removed. All these months I have felt like a hypochondriac for thinking I could be pg. Seems like the drug companies are telling us a little fib.....Good luck Kim! God Bless.

Angela - September 18

Kim, there is one way to test positive for pregnancy on all those tests and still not be pregnant. Some types of ovarian cysts can produce the pg hormone. as weird as it sounds thats still a possibility. Although I have seen waay too many posts on here of women getting pregnant on the IUD. I had mine taken out earlier this week. it;s a good thing I did, mine wasn't in the right place and that out me at high risk for getting pregnant with an IUD in place. good luck, I hope everything is allright.
