IUD Pregnancy

Dear Eva and Nancy, To respond to your postings, I had the Mirena for 3 yrs when I got pregnant, but it's supposed to be good for 5 yrs. I am 42, but had both my children after 30, so they are still relatively young. My age worries me (as does the effect on my finances), but there are new risk-free diagnostic tests that can predict your risk for Downs and Trisomy18 -- stuff that was unavailable as recently as a year ago here in Florida. Those things put my mind at ease. My husband and I are relatively healthy and look younger than we are, although we definitely feeling middle aged lately. My doctor said that the medical term for this type of pregnancy is "elderly". Jokingly, I told him that I preferred to be referred to as a "fertility goddess" instead (thank you very much), and that in earlier days, my "productivity" would have been something to be proud of. Anyway, when all is said and done, I have to find something to smile about. However, my main concern in posting here is that we have a common thread of people who didn't plan to get pregnant (and tried NOT to), don't necessarily want to be pregnant, and may be facing serious health issues (fetal or maternal) or other problems (e.g. financial) due to the pregnancy. These are very serious problems and it is nice to know that we are not alone.

I have had the Merina IUD in since October 2004, right after the birth of my 1 year old. I have never had a period using the IUD. For the last week or so ive noticed myself much hungrier than usual, and for the last few days ive had a clear discharge that is quite thin and runny. Its not alot but it is more than a mere spotting. Sometimes it even has a pinkish tint to it. These were the same symptons that led me to thinking i was pregnant the other 3 times i was. I keep thinking its impossible for me to be pregnant now, but after reading this... who knows. I havent told me husband though. Maybe ill get a test.

Kasey, it sounds to me like your IUD is falling out. you really should see your doctor. Can your husband feel it when you have s_x maybe? Did the doctor clip the strings at all? Cna you feel just the strings or can you feel parts of the IUD itself? these things are not normal and really should be loked at. I myself have never had this problem, but I have read many women on this forum who have. Please let me kow what happens.

I dont really have any words of wisdom, But I have the mirena iud to and I fear I may be pregnant to. What symtoms if any do you have and are considered high risk because of the iud still being in?

Cary---Scroll up to an entry made to "Patty" from me on September 16th of this year. It has some of the pregnancy symptoms you might be experiencing. Good luck!

I am so glad I found this site! I have been experiencing similar symptons ever since I had my Mirena fitted in 2003. This month I have had much stronger "pregnancy" symptoms. I went to my doctor, who was useless and refuses to entertain the idea I may be pregnant. I am definitely going to do another hpg, but I'm very scared.

I just found this website and can only add that I also think I could be pregnant with a Merina IUD. I went to the doctor to make sure it was still in and everything was Ok - she said it was, but that if my intuition was still bugging me, I could take another test in a few weeks.(Already took 1-negative) I have 3 wonderful children and got the Merina because I wasn't ready to say I was finished, just couldn't afford anymore right now. I guess I'll just test in another week or so. I can totally relate to all those who feel like they've just stepped on a huge emotional rollarcoaster.

I have been keeping up to date on this subject and i am so glad to say that I got my Mirena IUD out today. I will never use it or recomend it to anyone. Not with all the stuff that is going on with it. I am also happy to say that my husband and I are going to start trying for our third child. good luck to all with what ever your situation is. my thoughts and prayers are with you!!

HI. I AM AFRAID I AM PREGNANT WITH THE MIRENA IUD. I HAVE HAD IT SINCE OCT. 2004. I THOUGHT I COULDN'T BE BECAUSE OF HOW "EFFECTIVE" IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE, BUT MY SISTER HAS IT AND SHE JUST TOLD ME THAT SHE MISCARRIED AND DIDN'T EVEN KNOW SHE WAS PREGNANT, AT THIRTEEN WEEKS. SHE TOLD ME BECAUSE I AM PRETTY SURE I AM AND WAS TALKING TO HER ABOUT IT. I CAN'T WAIT TO TELL HER ABOUT THIS WEBSITE. THERE ARE SO MANY JUST IN THE PAST FEW MONTHS! I HAD BLOOD WORK DONE TODAY BECAUSE MY CHEAP HTP WAS NEGATIVE, BUT WHEN I HAD MY SON, I WAS ABOUT THREE MONTHS BEFORE ONE SAID POS. AND I HAVE TENDER BREASTS, THAT "MILK"FEELING WITH SWELLING, MY BELLY IS STARTING TO BULGE(MY HUSBAND NOTICED IT)MY ABDOMEN IS SORE, AS WELL AS MY BREASTS, AND I AM HAVING PAIN IN THE LOWER RIGHT SIDE. ALSO, TIRED AND CONFUSED FEELING. I GO FRIDAY FOR A SONOGRAM. WILL GET BACK TO U LADIES. GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU.

Hi board.. just an update.. I am now 17.3 weeks, so far so good.. My IUD (mirena) is still in my uterus, to the side close to the cervix, baby is far and so my doctor is optimistic.. she feels the IUD might be embeded in the uterus, making it a very good chance for this baby to grow .. she also feels the placenta would grow over it.. so im just hoping and praying.. How are all the other pregnant mommies? and for those of you who are worry about pregnancy, and the IUD not working, girls if you can get them out!!! they are not 99.9% effective!! i know how you all feel... i found out i was prego at about 4 weeks pregnant, and it has been sooooo stressful, it is scary! good luck to all, and moms, and all keep the updates coming!

Hi Ethi! Sounds like you are in the same situation that I am in! I last posted on Oct. 4th on what my doctor told me and it sounds very familiar, doesn't it! Did you doctor ever say anything about the IUD coming out on it's own during pregnancy like mine did? It's something you might want to bring up at your next appointment. Especially since you mention that it's so close to your cervix. Good luck and keep me posted!

I also wanted to add that although the IUD's are OBVIOUSLY not as effective as we thought, studies show they still are more effective/or just as effective as most forms of birth control. If you think about it, how many times have you heard about people getting pregnant on birth control, condoms, or even after getting tubes tied! I guess what I am trying to say is that NOTHING (besides abstinence) is 100% effective and maybe to better protect ourselves we need to consider useing 2 forms of birth control. I think it's just the luck of the draw unfortunatly!

Hi everyone. Reading all your stories has really helped me and I want to thank everyone for being so open and honest. I am going back to the nurse tomorrow - with a sample - and she is going to send it off to the hospital to do a more accurate test. I can't stand the worry any more. I'll let you know what happens.

Tracey - October 13

Well, I got the results of my test - negative - but I still don't really believe it. All day I have had back pain and cramps, I have felt sick and the smell of the soap in the doctor's surgery made me want to heave. I really don't know what to do. How many others had negative tests, then found out they were pregnant all along?

Dragonfly - October 14

Tracey---There could be a couple of explanations here. One is that you've become pregnant so soon after intercourse that your homone levels aren't great enough to show that you are actually pregnant yet (I'm talking HPT's, not a doctor's blood test). It could also be that you have a tubal pregnancy & that is why you're not showing any definite physical signs to your doctor i.e., usual uterine signs, apon physical examination. If your condition persists, go back to your doc & have another exam preformed or get a second opinion. I would make the appointment now so that by the time you go in, it has been about a week. This should give your body enough time to produce the hormone that shows that you are pregnant (or not). Call to ask your doc or a nurse first, though, because I'm not a medic & don't want to give you bad medical advice in case it is something else. if you don't get an answer that you're happy with from your second exam, go to another doc! Good luck & please keep us posted!
