IUD Pregnancy

Wow- I had no idea that this was happening to so many people. I have had my mirena in place now for 3 years... had it put in after a miscarriage. My period has been CRAZY! Had one for 2 days starting 4/23 which was normal- then had another one for 3 days 3/12- which was very early... now I've been spotting lightly off & on since the 1st. I thought maybe my cycle was changing since we went to visit family last month- with the whole being around other women stuff. But a week ago I was walking with my husband and saw my reflection in the window- I look freakin pregnant! Now even my baggy pants are tight! I've taken 3 home test in the last 2 weeks- all negative. So I'm off to the doctor on Thrusday to see what's going on. Has anyone ever experienced mirena gving off a false negative? If I'm figuring the dates right, I should definately be getting a positive by now.

Bethany..I have no idea about the Mirena, as I have the Paraguard w/no hormones. Let us know what the doctor says. I have an appointment today at 3pm. We'll see what happens then.

Rockijames. let me know how it goes for you at your doctors. If your not happy with the advice your doctor gives you always try and get a second or third opinion.. well i wish you luck and hope all goes well for you..

Maggie.. The doctor saw nothing on the ultrasound. No baby and no ectopic, but the tests are still positive. They think it may be a chemical pregnancy or that I'm not as far along as I think. I have a BETA blood test tomorrow and Saturday and then another doctor appt on Monday and we'll go from there. Thanks for your support. How are you doing?

Rockijames.. well i'm doing pretty good so far. I am 9 weeks pregnant and I get some bleeding every once in a while. My doctor says it's normal.. I'm glad to hear you don't have an ectopic pregnancy. Your situation is new to me. A blood test should let you know if you are pregnant.. well hope all goes good...

rockijames: you may be too early to see anything on an u/s. I know you have to have a beta of 1000 before you can see the sac and embryo. Bethany: I know after a while you can stop having periods with the Mirena IUD. For those that are experienced with checking the strings, is it common for the strings to feel really short like 1" long while ovulating? They have never felt this short to me.

Hi ladies. I didn't think I could get pregnant on the IUD. My bestfriend noticed me pointing out signs and said you might want to get a HPT. I laughed it off but after hearing her tell me stories I asked dh to pick one up on his way home. I took the first EPT and it came back negative..the line that indicates positive was faded out in the middle (like where the other line to make it positive would be)...but I considered it no. Then I took another one and left it alone, came back later to only find that it was a positive result. I can't recall how long I've left the second test but a positive is a positive right? I've heard that this is dangerous and I'm a bit nervous and stressed. We have 2 gorgeous girls and dh and I were done. I would've never gotten the IUD if I would've known the risk of getting pregnant! It's the weekend so there isn't anything I can do until Monday. I'm so scared that I have a false positive and I'm freaking out over nothing.

Southernmama: You can not trust a result that appears after 10 minutes. I would retest in 2 or 3 days. After 10 minutes you can get a evaporation line which appears to be positive but is not.

Just an update ladies. I tested again and it was negative. I can't explain how relieved I am. I'm so sorry that this BC isn't the best that it was suppose to be. Now I'm considering a diff. BC method. Any suggestions for a b___stfeeding mom? Good Luck to you all pregnant mommies on the IUD. I wish you and your baby the best of health.

Hi all! I've been reading this borad for the last few days. I was feeling pregnant and decided to take a hpt. It was positive. I called my dr. and the nurse called me back. She informed me that IUDs do not prevent pregnancies. They just make it in hospitable for the egg to implant in the uterus. That is why there is a higher degree of ectopic pregnancies. I go for a sono on Friday. I don't know what to expect at this point. I've had 5 miscarriages and one healthy birth. My husband and I weren't ready to go through this again so soon. The thought of having a higher risk of miscarriage is even more depressing. Why didn't the dr. tell me all this before he put it in???

Hi everyone. Maggie..How are you doing? I had another u/s on Monday and they saw the gestational sac and yolk sac. I go back again next Thursday and they hope to see the fetus and heartbeat at the point. They measured me at 5 wks, 1 day (about a week less along than we thought which explains the absence of a gestational sac in last weeks u/s). I still can't believe I'm pg after having the IUD for almost 3 years, but I'm warming up little by little. I hope everyone is doing well. Rocki

iCandy, I was a__sured more than once by my doc. and nurses that the IUD does not work by interfering with the fertilized egg and its process of attaching to the uterus. She a__sured me that all it does is prevents the sperm from meeting the egg...More recent studies shows that there is no real proof of the IUD actually interfering with a fertilized egg/ implantation. If that would have been the case i would not have choosen the IUD as my birth control method.

Southernmama: Your only other hormonal option is the minipill. While bfing you can not take any other bc pills because they have estrogen which will decrease your milk supply. You can also use condoms, cervical caps, a diaphragm, and spermicides. I was under the impression that the Mirena IUD can stop ovulation (but not in most woman), prevents the fertilization of the egg, thins the lining of the uterus and makes the uterus hostile for implantation. Whereas the Copper IUD only makes the uterus hostile to prevent implantation. That is why i choose Mirena. I actually originally thought that i would not be ovulating, boy was i wrong!

iCandy - June 22

Thanks for the info lavi. I did some more research on the IUD that I have which is the copper Paraguard and it does say that the copper is a spermicide but also makes the uterus hostile for the fertilized egg to implant. I went to Paraguards site and it doesn't tell how the IUD works, isn't that ironic. If I had known, I would never have had the IUD. The Mirena was not a good choice for me because of the hormones. Anyway it doesn't much matter now, it was confirmed this moring that I'm miscarrying and the IUD will be removed in the morning by my dr. This message board has really helped me. I didn't feel so alone and I'm glad that the knowledge can be pa__sed on. Thanks!

I am so sorry about the miscarriage icandy. I just found out that i am pregnant today. I am so afraid that i will miscarry again. I am going to wait, if the tests continue to get darker I will see my OB/GYN on monday and have the IUD removed. I am so depressed it is not even funny Im not depressed because I am pregnant but rahter because of the high risk of a miscarriage.

Ok, question for everyone...before you got pg with the Mirena IUD, did your husband complain of the IUD poking him? I am freaking out because this has been going on for weeks and now I am getting early pg symptoms. I will test this weekend, I just don't know how to break the news to hubby. Errr he is soo much against having a third child. I have two wonder girls. Anyhow, the pg symptoms I am having are a very high soft cervix, fatigue, extreem hunger, and bloating. These are not normal symptoms of my normal periods. Any suggestions for me on this situation?
