I just wanted you to know that I was told I you have a 50% chance of having the baby too early. As far as I understand there are no risks of birth defects because of the IUD just premature labour. I opted for the hysteroscopic procedure purely based on stats and not because I really want to get it done. I just want to try and give this baby it's best chance. I will be sad if I lose the baby because of the procedure but I think the risk of it being born too early is too high for me to feel comfortable leaving it in. It would be difficult for your other kids too if you have the baby too early. I wish you the best of luck and may you choose wisely.

I got the IUD in Oct. 04 and am now 15 weeks pregnant. She couldn't remove the IUD so it is now being monitored monthly by ultrasound. The IUD moved which is why I got pregnant but it is low enough right now that it is not interfering with the baby. The hope is that it stays low and the weight of the baby may push the IUD out or if it stays out of the way she will just remove it when she delivers the baby. I took the pregnancy test the first time and it was negative but know something was wrong so 3 days later I took another pregnancy test and it wasn't negative but wasn't positive either. Finally took a urine test and it was POSITVE and found out I was 8-9 weeks pregnant and not the 3-4 weeks I thought. I'm happy now but will definitely get my tubes tied when I deliver this one.

Hi everyone.. I was so happy to stumble upon this board , lately I think I am going crazy lol. I have had mirena IUD in since Sept 02 , the first 2-3 months almost constant spotting but now I have a normal cycle every 28 days or so 1-3 days of light spotting. My last period was on March 27th and starting on April 17 my b___st started getting a little sore and now are very sore, I am tired, moody etc.. I never ever get sore b___st before or anytime around or during my period since mirena has be inserted. I thought especially since its over 10days before my period is due. I called my midwife and she finds it very unlikely and rare that I would be pregnant but it seems more common than the doctors think. I took at test this am it came back negative just wondering if it is to early to test that is why I got a negative result . I have to admit I don't check my string myself only at my yearly so I decided to check and I can't feel or find anything. Maybe I am doing it wrong. Needless to say I am going to doctors tomorrow to get check to make sure its in place and I guess I will wait and see if I get my period. Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are... I was suppose to have IUD replaced in August with new one and after this, and then reading board I think I am going to have to reconsider it!

I have been reading this for about the last 2 weeks because i have been debating with my husband that i am pregnant. I have had a mirena in for almost a year and all has been going fine until this month. I have had every symptom possible ( i have had 3 other normal pregnancies so i have some idea). I have tested twice neg and this morning tested positive, i am 2 days overdue for my period. I have been to Drs( where they tested again neg). I'm having bloods tomorrow and the an ultra sound. We had contemplated more children but hadn't decided ( hubby is a little less enthusiastic than me!). We have a 41/2 yr, 3 and 1 yr old , we weren't quite ready for this possibility. I choose an IUD because of the success rate. We have already failed 3 other forms of contraception and wanted something that was supposedly this reliable. I am stressed about the statistics of removing the IUD but i would rather take that risk now than with the possible complications of a pemature birth. It doesn't take away the guilt that i know i will feel. I can't believe how often this is happening. I certainly won't be having another put back in, i will probably opt for something more permanent next time. I'm feeling for all those in this situation fingers crossed

I forgot to mention that I also had a shortening of the strings when I checked ( a good reason to check regularly !) and also that I have lost some weight recently not heaps but enough to notice. Someone earlier mentioned that this can potentially move the IUD. Has anyone else experienced this?, its not one of the particulars they tell you when you have one put it.

bloods came back negative. I feel a bit sad but relieved.I still have all of the symptoms of being pregnant but i guess that is the hormone in the IUD.I am seriously thinking of having it taken out. It has really messed with my head, all of the worry and then the emotional stuff about being pregnant the to find out you're not. I don't ever want to go through it again. There really should be some info about the possibility of all of this when you get one put in. Good luck to all those who are pregnant, my thoughts are with you.

I currently have an IUD in place, the Paraguard. I have had it for about 3 years. My period is 10 days late however I have taken several pg tests and they have all been neg. I have a Dr's appt. on Wed. and hopefully he will be able to tell me more. My husband and I are really frustrated that we don't know. I was pregnant once before and I am feeling the same way now as I did then, nausea, fatigue.....but still neg. So far I have taken 5 home pg test!!!!! I was searching the internet to find information about the precentage of women who have become pregnant with an IUD implanted. That is how I stumbled upon this web site. I have learned a lot from all of your stories and comments. I think though that some people need to do a little research before posting things that they believe is correct. I am a nurse and have read some things that are just not so. Anyway, thanks to, well, most of you!

Tracy, I came to this site in search of information and not that i believe everything i read but if you know that their is some incorrect info being posted please offer up the correct info I know It would be greatly appreciated especially with the validity of coming from someone like a nurse. I believe knowledge is power this is why i bothered to investigate this issue in the first place. I am still waiting for a period and still feel pretty poorly. I know that i'm not pregnant but i'm beginning to think that if this is the way life is going to be with this IUD in I may as well be at least then it would only be for a short time. I would also like to get any comments about changes with cycles, periods and these symptoms of pregnancy with an iud in, after they stopped b___stfeeding. I was regular and no problems and my baby weaned herself about 1 1/2 months ago and then i had all this trouble. I am wondering if the change in hormonal levels in combination with the hormone in the IUD could be to blame for the things i have experienced?

Wow, this thread has been going strong since 05, I wonder how they all turned out!
I've had a copper T in place for 6 years, and with two boys 6&7 I'm waiting on my period so I can get it out and try for a girl. The doctor is having me wait till then, because I guess it's easier to get out while menstruating.
I don't know if it is stress or just really wanting a baby or what, but I keep waiting for it to come and it hasn't. I'm only like 5 days late, but I 'feel' pregnant. I took a test and it was neg, but I think I took it too early. I'd much rather wait till after I get the thing out to conceive! I'm really anxious to find out, but I'm determined to wait another week before testing again, and let me tell you it's HARD!
I'll keep you all posted.

I can't believe I just sat down and read every single post!!
I have a question for those that found out they must have already been pregnant during IUD insertion - did you still bleed with the IUD even though you were already pregnant?
I am 22, I have a 3 1/2yo son and a 9 week old son (born 27th Feb). There is a strong chance that I conceived 6 days before my Mirena IUD was inserted 12th April. If I did and the pregnancy survived the IUD insertion I would be almost 6 weeks - I haven't tested yet but I have ordered some off the internet which should be here in a few days.
I had ovulation signs on the 6th April we had s_x 3 times around that date but he pulled out as we don't want to have another baby any time soon - but we are extremely fertile (conceived on BC pill before) and I guess it could have happened. I didn't think about it due to having the IUD inserted and having cramping and light bleeding/spotting from the IUD, but for the last 4-5 days I have been very nauseous especially in the night (just like with my previous pregnancies), I suddenly look pregnant again (I know I've just had a baby, but it just looked like loose flab before, now its rounded out and actually looks like a pregnant tummy unless I hold it in), I'm still a bit crampy but with no bleeding now, I am b___stfeeding and my let-downs have become painful and my milk supply has been playing up.
On this thread there were quite a few that discovered they must have been pregnant already when the IUD was inserted so I'm thinking this may have happened to me. Are these symptoms totally IUD related or am I pregnant?! Hmmm will let you know what the HPT says in a few days!

I was wandering if any of you have found out that it is possible for the mirena IUD to give you a false result. I have four kids 5,4,3 and almost 2. After my son I had mirena put in cus my last 2 were a result of the pill. I was gettin a period every other month with light spotting in between and now for the last 2 months i've had major pregnancy symptoms and have taken sever test all neg. Was wander should i go to dr or is neg accurate?

I have been following the posts here since the beginning of March. I got the IUD in July of 04....I think I had a lot of cramping and pain in the first few months but then got better so I decided to keep it in. I had my period up until the end of last year and didn't mind when they tapered off. Well....at the end of March I started having all the signs of pregnancy...hungry but nauseus, headaches, cramping but no period....emotional....everything. I called my gyn. and they didn't even act like they cared. I kept checking the strings to see if they were getting shorter or longer and after about a week of extreme symptoms and the doctors not really listening to me I tugged on the strings because they were really low and the IUD came out...no problem, no pain, no bleeding...nothing. So, I called the gyn. and took it in. They didn't even examine me. Since then I have tested negative to pregnancy tests but still have cramping without a period, nausea, tired all the time and even my b___sts have started leaking a little milk! My gen. dr. ordered an MRI to see it it was a tumor letting out hormones but it wasn't. I don't know what to think. The gyn. did give me the NuvaRing to try when I took the IUD in to them a month ago but I didn't put it in right away b/c I didn't know if I should add any more hormones to this if it is hormones causing all this or if I should put it in if I end up really being pregnant. My gen. dr. told me 2 days ago to go ahead and use the Nuvaring and it should bring on my period in 3 weeks. ARG! I feel like I'm going crazy. I know it's not phantom pregnancy b/c the symptoms started while I had an IUD and wasn't even THINKING about getting pregnant. I just don't understand how it's been out for almost a month and I'm STILL having symptoms......at least I don't feel alone. I just wanted to share in case anyone else feels alone or in case anyone else has some answers. Thanks!

I am shocked to read everything that I have read here today. I have three children and we opted for the IUD back in September 06. I thought that it was supposed to 'prevent' you from getting pregnant. Well, life had been busy and the last two days I have been drinking alot of chocolate milk - something I crave when I am pregnant, I even said to my husband two nights ago that I only drink this stuff when I am pregnant. It didn't dawn on my until yesterday though that I am almost 3 weeks late. Took a home preg test today and yes I am infact expecting baby number 4. Now I am certainly more concerned about the health and well being of this unborn child. I am scared todeath. I don't want to lose this baby, I pray that there are no defects but heck, I am not even on folic acid as I wasn't planning a pregnancy. With the other three we planned them so I was on folic acid when I was supposed to be. Of course, this all happens on the today, the Friday of a long weekend, so my doctor isn't in until Tuesday. I don't want to wait that long to get some answers but I clearly don't have another choice here. I am praying that everything is going to be okay.
