Low HCG Numbers

Ashley, I am so sorry about what you are going through-I am also doing IVF, on my second cycle, I miscarried very early with my first attempt, had great numbers and they just fell after that. But I have heard 2 great stories of women going through ivf 4-5 times and finally are pregnant! they swear by acupuncture-have you given it any thought? I just started it, and I am hoping it helps me with my second cycle.

Hi Amy. Thanks. I have thought about acupuncture...the nurse mentioned it to me before the first cycle, but I didn't check into it. She didn't really say much about it—just handed me a brochure and said "some people do this". She has since left my doctor's practice...fine with me, as her bedside manner wasn't that great. I think she had short-timer's disease and wasn't really "into" my case. I certainly will look into acupuncture if we do IVF again...I want to try everything possible to improve the odds. What exactly do they do, and what's it supposed to help? Where are you in your second cycle? I wish you the best of luck...please keep us posted!

Ashley, The acupuncture is painless, and so far the acupuncturist has just taken a long history of my stress levels, diet and exercise history, menstrual cycle history, etc... the needles are supposed to be placed in areas where they feel will release anxiety/tension and also increase blood/energy flow-i found it very relaxing. I also found someone who specialized in infertility, which I think is a good idea. Anyway, i am doing a frozen embryo transfer for my second cycle, and I just started my estradiol shots 2 days ago, -my transfer is scheduled for the 31st-

I found out I was pg on 7/21...went to the dr. on 7/25 & hcg level was 150 then went again on the 27th & it went up to 382. So far, so good. Went back to the dr. on 8/8 for an U/S, which according to my LMP I was 6w3d, the dr. saw the gestational sac but no heartbeat but said not to worry cuz they only see one 50 percent of the time at this point. Tested hcg again & it was up but only 990. Told me to come back in a week for another scan...still no h/b, but the sac grew so they are wondering about my date of conception. I have a history of m/c, so I am not too optimistic at this point. I have been doing a lot of research on the net & I think I probably have a blighted ovum. Has anyone else had this before or heard of it? From what I understand, the embryo implants in the uterus but there is something chromosomally abnormal that prevents the embryo from developing. The sac still continues to grow & levels increase but not like they should. I go again tomorrow for another scan. I hope they can tell me one way or the other...the uncertainty is torture. I have 2 beautiful healthy boys, despite my history with m/c, which helps me get through. But it's still hard to go through just the same, no matter how many times you go through it. My thoughts & prayers are with you all. Your stories have helped me. Thanks for sharing. Keep the faith, keep trying & have fun doing it.

I had extremely low levels with red and brown spotting. I had to have several tests to monitor my low hCG levels. I was scared to death. It all worked out. I ended up with a healthy baby boy. It is a year and a half later and my husband and I are trying to conceive. I have missed my period, had brown spotting, but have been getting negative home pregnancy test results. I am pretty sure it is all due to low levels again. The more I read about this, I am finding how common this is. Many have to wait several weeks for their levels to be high enough.

OMG. I am so happy to have found a happy ending to what I am experiencing. I am supposed to be 6 weeks today and am experiencing spotting. I have been through a miscarriage before and don't want to do it again. My hCG levels are low (in the 500's) and my dr wants to take more blood on Monday. I am more confident this time around, but still a little nervous. Any words will help.. thx.

I had a second u/s on August 19th - nine days after I was told my levels were on the low end (907) for being 4 weeks and 2 days. We have a heartbeat! Things seem to be normal now that I am 5 weeks and 6 days. As of today I am 6 weeks and two days. I worried excessively over the nine day wait and was so relieved so see my pregnancy advance. This is my first so not sure what to expect. The ranges are so varied that I think sometimes we are left to worry without just cause. They told me my levels were too low for only being four days past my AF due date...well if HPT's only measure between 25 - 100 - and double every two to three days - then my levels were on target if you do the calculations. Thanks to the many women who posted here because I got a real better sense of what my levels were - everyone progresses differently and so if we hear less than positive news in the early stage of pregnancy - hold tight and just wait and see....miracles do happen. This doesn't mean I won't quit worrying but I finally was able to take some precious time out to enjoy this pregnancy and find renewed hope. I wish you all the best...

I too, like all of you are going through a similar situation. I just had my first IUI on Aug. 1st and my levels are abnormal. They started off at 19 and although they doubled a couple times they are now only 147 (they should be 200+) I had light bleeding last night and cramping. I feel like a time bomb just waiting to b__w. It's too early for any answers, but the unknown and the waiting is killing me. Good luck to you all. You are not alone.

Tina - August 22

I don't have any answers, just story, I found out on 7/28 that I was pregnant, quite a shock as I was not trying to get pregnant, broke up with my bf in April, and had been with two other men since then. My bf and I were on fertility drugs for two years, because I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, A blocked fallopian tube and fibroid tumors in my uterus, we never got pregnant. Then I had my last period on June 12, 2005, was with someone on June 26, and someone else on July 10, then went in and found out I was pregnant on July 28, HCG Level was 1670. About a week later I started to see some brownish discharge on the toilet paper after I would go pee, and called the doctor. She had me come in for another blood test and an u/s. Blood test was 7090 on 8/8 and u/s showed a 5w2d gestational sac, then on 8/15 the hcg level was 9120 and u/s showed a 6w2d gestational sac. She is still having me come in weekly for blood tests and u/s's and physical exam. My cervix is still closed and no bleeding, no cramping, no pain. I did have a yeast infection. Does anyone have any ideas if this will be a viable pregnancy, or should I give up hope? I'm not sure what to think anymore! Please help!!! Tina

Karen to Tina - August 22

Hi Tina - I don't have any answers for you either...but if you are only at 6 weeks and 2 days - it may be too early to see a heart beat. I'm not sure what my levels are at this point but I know at 5 weeks and 6 days I was really luck because we had a heartbeat - which in some opinions is amazing because I haven't yet hit 6 weeks which is the number they use to give an idea as to when to expect to the see the heartbeat. We didn't have a fetal pole and as I may have mentioned - I don't know what this means...but the fact that I saw a little beat between what looked like to tubes - had me convinced that my pregnancy is advancing. I wish I knew what my numbers were/are...to help you out. Hold out hope and let time give you the answers...don't a__sume anything yet. By the way - how big was your gestational sac? At four weeks and 2 days - mine was 2.8 mm and nine days later it was measuring about 13 mm...I also had a yolk sac inside with the little hearbeat...but everyone is different...I wish you all the best and stay strong and confident....

Krissy - August 22

When I went for my u/s at 6 weeks & we didn't see a heartbeat the Dr. told me they only see it 50 percent of the time at this point. So, don't worry unless you have to. I also read somewhere on one of these sights that once a heartbeat is seen there is only about a 10 percent chance of miscarriage after that. So seeing that heartbeat is a biggie & a really good sign. Best of luck to all of you & never lose hope.

Krissy and Karen - August 22

Thank you!! That helps me to hold onto hope! I am so wanting this "miracle" baby as I have been calling her. I'm also convinced it is going to be a girl! LOL I don't know what to expect or how to feel. I know I'm scared every time I go in for a test. I've had two u/s's now and nothing is showing, I hope it is just too early! I am sure that because you saw a heartbeat it will go well for you! I don't know how big my gestational sac was measuring, they just said the weeks and days. I am also very irregular periods, but those were the only two times I have had s_x, other than the weekend of June 12, my last menstrual period. I will keep you posted! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you both as well, that all progresses well and we ALL see heartbeats and have little ones in March/april of next year! Tina

Tina - August 23

OH CONGRATULATIONS TEIGAN! That is great news!! I'll keep my fingers and toes crossed for you to continue getting good news! As long as I am on bed rest that is! LOL I'll have to uncross them if I get up though. I had some bright red bleeding last night, and my dr. appt. is at 4:30 today, so maybe I'll finally get the closure I need and can move on. I'm sure there is no more hope for my having a viable pregnancy. Thanks for listening all.

teigan - August 23
