does low progestrone cause lack of period

No, low Progesterone usually triggers your period. When Prog. goes up when your pregnant, it keeps the baby "in there" so to speak. Like glue.

chin- YES actually!!! I have always had a lack of progesterone production in which I wouldn't get my period, but maybe every 3 months, etc. So, it may not "prevent" you from getting your period, but may make you not ovulate. Its called, "Luteal Phase Defect".... Also, its not a low progesterone that makes you get your period.. its when they rise real high for ovulation and then drop dramatically. It is the drastic drop that makes you get your period. Just like when they put you on, "provera" to help induce your period... All its doing to throwing all these hormones in your body and then within 24 to 48 hours after you stop that last pill, you should get your period because of the high drop in your progesterone level.

Also... they say that most woman who have pretty irregular periods, probably have "luteal phase defect"... basically lacking progesterone. A lack of progesterone inhibits the uterus lining NOT to get as thick as a normal amount would. WHICH if the lining isn't thick enough, implantation may not take. Or if it does start to attach, and your progesterone is low, and your lining of the uterus isn't thick, the pregnancy may not implant well or may not keep the implantation good enough to survive. That is why I had to go on progesterone supplements right when I found out that I was pregnant (because I know I don't produce enough)... just to keep my lining thick and save the pregnancy. So far, so good! After 3 m/c's and no births, we finally figured this is the only reason for my pregnancy problems and sure enough this one is doing so great now, because I am on the progesterone supplements. :) and my lining is real nice and healthy for the baby. I couldn't believe how much better it was this time around in the ultrasound. :) Hope that helps!!

Daniella, good luck w/your pregnancy, so sorry to hear about the 3m/c's. I was lucky enough that my doc tested my prog. right when I found out and it was low but then we repeated and it went down so they put me on the Crinone gel til 12 weeks. Now I am at 20 weeks and doing good so far! Keeping my fingers crossed that everything is ok, my first u/s is the 21st, can't wait!!!! All my screening tests came back normal so hopefully we are good to go! Good luck to you!

Dani- 2 questions.... you are 20 weeks along and they haven't done an ultrasound yet!? Also, do you remember what your progesterone level came back at, when you found it was low and started taking crinone? I am currently on crinone 8% because my last pregnancy m/c because my body just doesn't produce enough. But, so far, this one looks good.

Hi! Well I found out right away I was pg and my prog. level was 11. Since it was low, doc retested the the week after is was 9. My doc put me on Crinone 8% 2x a day and the next week it was up to 24. My doc wasn't concerned because it came up and stayed up. My HcG rose perfectly so there was no need for an ultrasound. I had no bleeding or cramping, If I did, then she would have ordered an ultrasound. Everything else has been normal and usually she does the first u/s at 20-22 weeks. I have read that is very common and many people I have talked to say the same thing. I was disappointed but oh well! :) The triple screening or quad they call it now, all came back normal so that was a relief. Even though we have no conditions in either family, you just never know! :) What were your levels?

I am surprised that he didn't put you on the progesterone supplements as soon as the first level came back low... But, oh well! Your all good now, and your beyond that point :) I'm sure your ultrasound will go fine. For some reason all my friends had 2 ultrasounds... one at 8 weeks, to make sure it had a heartbeat and to do measurements... then the second one at about your time to determine the s_x. That is about everyone I know in my hometown of Chicago... The only reason why I got my first at 5 weeks, was because I had a previous ectopic and they wanted to make sure that it was in the uterus. But, that is basically all they checked. My next ultrasound is at 8 weeks.. Then I'll probably only get one more at around 20 weeks to find out the s_x. I can't wait to hear back from you after the 21st... Are you going to find out what your having??

Hi Daniella! I am from Chicago too, how funny! I think because I had no bleeding or cramping she was very optimistic everything was fine. We heard the heartbeat at 11 weeks so I was releaved about that. I was a little disappointed we didn't do an ultrasound right away too. She didn't put me on Crinone right away because she thought the levels would go up by themselves because it was so early. So the next week when it dropped to 9 in the 6th week, they called me immediately and called in the Rx right away. Then I had my levels checked every week until 12 weeks. I think I'll probably only get 1 ultrasound unless something happens, which I pray it doesn't. I was soooo sick yesterday too, I had the flu, my body hurt soooo bad, it was just awful. Today I am fine THANK GOD! I will let you know after the ultrasound Wednesday, and YES, I have to find out, I am impatient enough!! :o

I am 5wk by LMP dates and my 1st level was ck'd at 3wk it was 13.1, a week later it has dropped to 8.5 and my MD doesnt want to RX prog supplements until he re ck's it, is that usual or odd? It feels like he is writing me off as an "impending m/c" without even trying to save this pg...does anyone know how low can the levels get and pg still be viable??I will not be able to sleep tonite...

Christina- It doesn't hurt at all to be put on the supplements for progesterone, so... most dr's will put you on it especially if its low. My last dr. didn't even want to test it, and finally after begging, he did (I was 10 weeks pregnant) and 4 days later my babies heartbeat had stopped... My progesterone production was its lifeline and my dr. was the one that cut it short. I know this in my heart, because they little thing kept fighting to live. It was too late by the time I started the supplements. AFTER the miscarriage I got tested and my body just doesn't produce enough progesterone. So, I left that dr. (Dani) that was at Great Lakes Naval Hospital... I'm sure you know where that is. All the sailors around there. ANyhow, I dropped him. And my new dr. ordered me Crinone 8% the moment we had a positive preg. test. I have been on it about 2 weeks now... My level was 19.1 the first week on it at only 4 weeks gestation. They re-tested it last week, but haven't got the results back yet... Dani- did they put you on anything other than Crinone? Because I'm not sure this is enough. But, guess we have to see what my levels tested last week come back at. ALSO... it might be your insurance as far as the ultrasound goes. I can pretty much get one anytime I want, because I don't have to pay anything since its at a military hospital. I still can wait to hear your good news afterwards... Best of luck!!!

Daniella, thanks for the info...i have had a very small amount of dark brown d/c today and hope that it isnt too late to start the progesterone, but I worry too that since my HCG levels arent doubling and are quite low, that maybe it is..all I can do is pray, hope, and see what happens at my ov tomorrow. Good luck to you and hopefully the progest supp you started early will prevent any m/c risk for you.

Thank you! I really hope it works out well this time also.... Anyhow... if your already starting to m/c unfortunately its kinda late to take progesterone supplements..... BUT, if you do m/c tell the dr. that you would like to get check out to see if you have luteal phase defect (lack of progesterone production) in case you get pregnant again, you will know to get on supps right away. Otherwise, your levels may just have dropped because you were losing it, but that you didn't lose it because it dropped. I KNOW that lost it because it was low, it never dropped... it just wouldn't get high enough, and it was too late. They usually don't do testing until you've had 2-3 m/c's.. which sucks, but since I had 3, I'm getting everything I need done with this one and all the test came back perfect. ONLY thing wrong is the lack of progesterone production which the supps seem to be doing good for this preg. I get my lab back from last weeks test soon. Hopefully they didn't drop from the 19.1
