I am abuot 7 weeks pregnant. This is my 1st. I have had infertility for 3 1/2 years and we ended getting pregnant on our own. We are so excited. I had my blood work done on April 6th my progestrone was low. He put me on 100mg twice a day. I went back on Monday the 25th and saw the heartbeat for the 1st time. I have started to spotting. My progestrone is at 11.8 and I am on progesterone 3 times a day now. I am spotting more and it scares me. I go back on the 5th of May for another ultra sound. I just hope I am not losing the baby. I have no cramping. I am glade I am that I found this web page because reading everyone stories makes me feel safer. Should I be worried?

Can anyone please tell me if they know of anyone who was on progesterone suppositories and had thier baby, with no birth defects, Im 5 weeks and was told today that my progesterone level is low 9. and I need to start taking it and Iam very skeptical about it after researching all day I found no comfort in knowing that they have not clinically ruled out possibilty of birth defects. I dont know what to do. A part of me feels like leaving it in the hands of God if this pregnancy is meant then it will be, and I shouldn't take this medication, so scared. Please help!

Nadia-I have had two healthy full-term pregnancys while taking progesterone. I would not have carried these two to full term if I had not taken the progesterone. I have had two misscarriages-these pregnancies I did not use progesterone and I wound up losing them. I am now 20 weeks pregnant with my third baby and the ultrasound came back great. The baby looks good and healthy-no birth defects. You have to keep in mind that progesterone is a naturally occuring hormone in the body. Taking it will not harm your child. They just have to say they "have not ruled out the possibility of it causing birth defects" because no medication in this world is 100% guaranteed. Even Tylenol, which they tell you take during pregnancy for pain, is not 100% guaranteed safe. Anyways, I have two healthy boys who were born on progesterone and they are wonderfully healthy kids. I hope this helps and do what your doctor advises-take the progesterone to help insure the implantation of the embryo and help avoid misscarriage. All pregnancys are still in god's hands anyways-if the pregnancy is not meant to be, progesterone won't stop you from misscarrying. It will only help maintain a healthy pregnancy. Good Luck to you and hang in there.

Although my case is a little different, I am experiencing the same issue as many of you are experiencing. I had the IVF procedure done. Because my body does not recognize the donor egg, I was put on Progesterone v____al inserts in order for the pregnancy to be fully supported and nourish the lining of my uterus. When I was 6 weeks pregnant I had some bleeding with NO cramping. I was put on bed rest for 4 days. On the 3rd day of my bed rest I had A LOT of bleeding once again with NO cramping. I went to the doctors the very next day for an ultrasound. They could detect a heartbeat. WOW was I relived. There was however a blood clot near the sack of the baby. I was put on bed rest for 1 ½ more weeks. The doctors then prescribed Progesterone oil injections daily due to the fact that the Progesterone v____al inserts were not strong enough. Although these were very large shots, the bleeding stopped. My husband was able to give these shots to me. I was on these shots for the remainder of my 1st trimester. I am happy to say that I am now 16 weeks pregnant. The best advice I can give everyone after going through this nerve-racking experience myself is – take it easy, go with your instincts, and call the doctor (the doctor will put your mind at ease). I hope this information will help someone.

Hi there, I just wanted to share my story with everyone in hopes to get some answers to questions that I have and to share my sorrows with people who can really understand what I am going though. I suffered my 1st m/c on 1/8/5 I was 6-7weeks when it happen. On 12-29-04 I starting spotting (brownish) I was given an appt same day for an u/s she said everything looked fine. Was told it happens sometimes, women spot at the begining of their pregnancy. After a couple of days the bleeding continued and the cramping began. Again I was told your body is just getting use to the pregnancy, like everyone else I was really not looking forward to those bathroom trips that left me more and more scared at what I saw and felt. On 01/05/05 while in the store with my youngest son I felt a gush of warm fluid down my right leg. I was in a full panic but did not want anyone nor my son to see me like that. That's when I felt the second gush of blood go down my leg on to the store floor and on my white work sneakers. I did everything that day in my power to drive my son to school and drive home where I knew I would be able to display the heartbreaking emotions I was feeling. I ran out of my car and ran straight for the bathroom only to discover my pants, socks and sneakers full of blood. I started to cry and call for my husband who was in our bedroom. I will never forget the look on my husband's face when he saw the bloody scene in the bathroom. He tried to console me telling me everything was going to be ok. while I was crying telling him what I didn't want to face before, that we were losing the baby. We were told that day that nothing could be done and because I was bleeding w/clots that I would be able to m/c on my own, which I did on 1/8/5. I was so heartbroken at losing my baby. I never had any trouble with my 2 prior pregnancy. But we had the green light to try again only after my hcg levels went back to normal and after at least 2mens cycles My doctor thought maybe some kind of genetic abnormalities. The doctor said that if we tried again hopefully it would be a good pregnancy and he didn't think we would have any trouble. On 4/5/5 we were thrilled when that ept test showed a pos. I cried and hugged my husband. I didn' t think that I would get pregnant again so soon. This time I felt different I felt good, confident that everything was going to go out well. But our happiness was cut short when on 04/11/05 once again I started spotting (brownish again) I called by dr. and we hoped for the best. Once again we just hoped that it was implantation bleed, but I knew it wasn't. Still with our fingers crossed we began the process of seeing if my hcg levels would go up. And they did, but not fast enough. I was told they should go up at least 1.5 every other day and they had my blood taken every other day. I had my u/s booked for 04/20/05. My levels dropped the week before and was told by the nurse that my dr thought I had already m/c again. I was once again heartbroken. When I went for my u/s no sign of my pregnancy was found so my dr booked a d&c on 4/21/5. After the procedure was done my hcg levels were taken again only to find that the levels were still going up. So when I went to my dr's for a post-op on 4/22/5 my dr told me I have an ectopic pregnancy. As if I haven't suffered enough I had to have injections of methotrexate one on each bun. I still have burning on both of my b___t cheek area. On 4/30/5 I was rushed to the hospital because I was in soooo much pain I thought the ectopic pregnancy ruptured. I went thru hell again and again with all the tests they were doing. But I had faith because my dr was in touch with the md on call. I believe it is very important to know what is going on with your body so you could update doctors if they don't know your medical history. This young doctor wanted to give me another round of that methotrexate when my own dr didn't think I needed it. all I heard was that it was a big possibility that I was going in for surg. I couldn't believe my ears. I thought I had suffered enough but here I was going thur more pain. I was in the hospital for over 8hrs. My hcg levels were still going down but so was my blood pressure. Which they thought could of been a bleed but they didn't know where it was coming from. I never ever thought that this could be possible. I have cried so many tears for so many day that my eyes ache. I was sent home when my levels were normal. I don't think I have ever prayed so hard as I did that day. I still have faith that is what keeps me going. I feel so numb sometimes it really scares me. My dr is going to send my husband and I for further testing. We want to know why this is happening. My husband and I believe that I'm not making enough hormone to maintain the pregnancy, but I guess we will find out sooner or later. What I want to know did anyone else go thur any kind of testing before begining any of the shots or pills? I am so thankful that I found this site. Any info is better than no info at all. Please help? My hope and prayers will be with all of us. Good luck and God bless.

Becky - May 2

Rosa-First of all I am soo sorry about your losses. I have had two misscarriages myself, one at 6 weeks and one at 9 weeks after already having seen the heartbeat. I know exactly the pain you are feeling and I am so sorry you have to feel that. What I want you to think about though is that you do know that you can have a healthy child-sometimes this just happens to us. As for myself, I never had any testing, my Doctor just put me on progesteron after my first misscarriage and kept me on it until 16 weeks. I had my last misscarriage in October and opted to not take the progesterone but I misscarried, so when I started ovulating again I began the progesterone and now I am 21 weeks pregnant with my third child. My two sons would not have been born without the help of progesterone so I want you to keep the faith, be adamant about your care and I agree with you-it is very important to know your body. Maybe you should ask your doctor to start you on the suppositories when it is safe for you to get pregnant again. Start them before you conceive so that way when you do get pregnant you already have a nice healthy progesterone level to insure proper implantation. Even if this isn't the reason you are misscarrying, it certainly won't hurt to take the extra precaution. Good luck to you and your husband, keep that faith that you will have another healthy pregnancy and please let us know when you get pregnant again. I will say a prayer for you and your hubby tonight, okay.

I just wanted to give everyone an update. I am 18 weeks pregnant and have been on progesterone since my 5th week. I went into the doctors today and she told me that everything is fine and I can stop the progesterone. We were able to hear the baby's heartbeat and in another month we will be able to find out the s_x. Everything is fine and no problems. There is hope just keep your heads up and wish for the best. Good luck to all of you!

Rosa...I am very sorry to hear about your pain. I hope I can help. Although I am not a doctor, I can tell you a little about my experience...you can also read about it the msg. before you. I had the IVF procedure done. I was on many shots, patches, and v____al inserts. Since I used a donor egg my body will not/does not recognize nor support a pregnancy without the hormones. I was using progesterone v____al inserts, but they were not enough. I had to be placed on the prog. oil injections. I also had to still use the estrogen patches for 2 weeks before my procedure and for 2 1/2 months after my procedure. I was also put on estrace (another form of estrogen) v____al inserts. before and after the procedure. When all was through with the medications I did not bleed. However, if I did start, I would have to again start the estrogen patches right away. I did bleed, and bleed A LOT about 5 1/2 wks. and again at 6 weeks. The reason for the bleeding was not enough progesterone. that is when they put me on the injections instead of the v____al inserts. Also, one sac was empty (which caused a clot) and one sac had a baby and a heartbeat. I hope this helped. If you need further explanation or more infor about my medications let me know! Best wishes and keep your head up! :)

At 4 weeks pg my progesterone level was at 14 with my current pg, and at 11 with my 1st pg. My 1st pg turned out fine, and so for so is my 2nd.

Thank you guys for your kind words it does make me feel better knowing that I am not alone. Today I went in for a check up first thing this morning my hcg levels have gone down to 700. My doctor is very pleased about that. I'm happy I just have to go for bloodwork once a week. Thank you Becky for all of your kind words I'm not the first person you have help and I know I won't be the last. ? for you did you only do the v____al suppositories? And for mwat please do provide more info about everything and anything. I have a ? for you. Were the med they put you on different kinds progesterone and estrogen, do they interact w/each other or do they balance each other out? Were the meds different because of the IVF procedure or is it up to the med dr? My dr doesn't want me to try again for a while until they run more test and then she is sending me to a specialist. I not sure what kind of specialist. She wants not only my body to heal but she wants me to heal emotionally as well. I am going thur one heck of a rollercoaster ride. Once again thank you guys so much. I am keeping the faith. Good luck and God Bless. I'll keep you all in my prayers.

It’s me again Rosa. I hope this information helps. I actually got out all of my instructions regarding my procedure to see what I could find. As for the medication I was taking: Prometrium at first (they were the v____al inserts) They are another form of Progesterone. I was on these 3 days before my procedure and then until 51/2 weeks when I bled a little. Then they put me on Progesterone oil injections (I bled A LOT on the 3rd day of the injections I was on these injections until my 12th week- Progesterone is a hormone administered to support the development of the endometrium and is administered after egg retrieval. Progesterone stimulates an increase in the thickness of the endometrium, and its blood supply, thus better preparing it to accept a developing embryo. Progesterone helps to support the uterine lining. Progesterone occurs naturally and is secreted by the corpus luteum, the small structure formed by the ovarian follicle after ovulation. A progesterone deficiency can occur after ovulation, referred to as a luteal phase defect, and cause pregnancy loss. Progesterone is available in several forms including injection (IM in oil), gel, v____al suppository, oral troche, and as micronized oral capsules (prometrium). I know that was a mouth full, but I hope that helped you understand a little about progesterone. One’s body produces it naturally, but from what I have read and am told a lot of m/c happen because of lack of this. I was also on the Vielle Dot Patches and Estrace Tablets (inserted v____ally): both medications are forms of estrogen; they are used to prepare the lining of the uterus for implantation. I used the patches about 3 weeks prior to my procedure and until the 10th week of my pregnancy. The patches started out with 2 patches placed on my body every other day, then 3…then 4. After the procedure I was back to 2 every other day until the I was off of them (my 10th week). Just please remember that my body does not recognize the donor egg. This is why I was on so much. From what I understand from talking to the doctors. I hope that answered some questions you have. All in all, I believe the medications worked together to balance each other out. I believe there are different kinds of progesterone and estrogen out there, but those are the meds. that I solely dealt with. I am not sure what other Inst_tutes other than the one I have been dealing with (and of which I highly recommend) what particular medications they use. I am sure they are all along the same lines, however, they might be different brands. The progesterone oil injections were not pleasant (they were very think needles and very long) but I am sure you feel the same way, you will do what ever it takes. I think your doctor is right with healing emotionally as well as physically. I can really empathize with what you are going through. I see you mentioned your husband and God, well keep that support system alive. No matter what your support systems will always be there for you. I will keep you in my prayers as well. If you have any other questions…please do not hesitate to ask…I am here for you.

I am in the same boat as you, Stephanie. Although I haven't experienced any spotting, the dr. says my prog. level is a little low(14) and he would like to see it in the 20's. I just took my 1st prometrium(100mg 2xday). I go back tomorrow for more blood work. This is our first pregnancy, so all of this is totally new to me! I have a wonderful, caring doctor that I trust, and he tells me not to worry. So, I am going to do what he says, and enjoy this special time, as it will never happen again(having the first baby). To answer your question, my doctor says that it will not harm the baby - taking the prog, will help implantation until the placenta take take over. Hope this has helped you. It makes me feel better knowing there are others going through the same thing as me.

m&m - May 6

I have had two successful stories. my first was 14.7 at about 4 weeks and my next one was 22.3 at about 5-6 weeks. I am now hoping #3 goes well, we have a 13.5 at 4-5 weeks. Both of my girls are very healthy and happy at 5 and 3. good luck....

Rosa - May 9

MWAT thank you again for the information you have given me. It is very useful. I want to able to know what is out there and how it is used so I won't be so lost. If makes me feel a lot better knowing that I have options or at least I am able to discuss this with my doctor and not be totally clueless. My ? is did they stop all the patches & shots once you reach a certain point in your pregnancy. I know from others that I read some stop taking the meds either anywhere form 12-16 week. And is there any further testing like bloodwork. In your entry for 05/01/5 you said you had your u/s did you find out what you are having?. I pray everything is well. Once again thank you so much. Good luck and God bless.
