Progesterone Level

I m/c recently and now on clomid again. Doc prescribed prog. v____al suppositories, but the pharmacy gave me a tube of cream and a suringe to administer it. Is this right? I thought suppositories were capsules or something. I really am hoping to get PG again this cycle, and by taking the porgesterone hope to keep it this time. Any advice would be appreciated!

I am in the boat. I have been bleeding for about a week now and have been back and forth between the doctor and the couch. I am going stir crazy with this staying off your feet business. Anyway, I am about 7 weeks and I have already seen a heartbeat on the ultrasound but my progesterone was 9 and my hcg 11,000. A few days later I was retested and my progesterone was 10.5 and hcg went only to 14,000. Doc put me on 200 mg of prometrium 3 times per day but said he was kind of worried because my hcg levels should be doubling. I have to go for another blood test and ultrasound on Monday. Just playing the waiting game until then. This is so frustrating. But finally today, the bleeding has subsided. I guess this is a good sign.

I am 4 weeks along, I began spotting after being put on Progesterone. My level before was 17.?I was told to discontinue the progesterone due to spotting.

Dani - August 14

Maybe the spotting was due to implantation but the progesterone doesn't cause the spotting....that sounds strange. 17 is pretty good!

My experience is that it is not good. I just went in on Tuesday and there was no heartbeat. I had a DNE on Thurs. I feel fine physically now but it is really hard to go through losing a baby.

I too have just stumbled across this site. Only have way through reading everything but wanted to share why this site has helped me. I am a gestational surrogate for the same family, 3 pregnancies(IVF). First one ended at 6.5 weeks after a bleeding sac. Did see a HB but lost the baby and D&C'd a week later. Second pregnancy- a wonderful little boy, almost 2 years old now. 3rd pregnancy just ended Friday with a D&C after waking up bleeding. Ok, all 3 pregnancies I was on estrogen shots every 3 days and progesterone in oil shots daily. That's 1 ml of 50 mg. Which doesn't make sense because to wean me off they put me on 200 mg prometrium 3 times a day and then 2 times, v____ally. How can that be weaning? Does the shot absorb more? Anyways, never made it to total weaning as I lost the prenancy at 9.5 weeks but they told me it had expired 2 weeks previous. I had an U/S at 7 weeks which showed a healthy HB. Does anyone think the u/s may have caused this? Does anyone know if a surrogate needs three times the hormones as someone carrying naturally their own biological child? Does anyone think that the weaning may have caused the M/C. Or is it most likely something wrong with the embie considering the first m/c? The whole pregnancy I never felt it was right. Little sickness as compared to a lot with my own 4 children and even the other 2 surrogacies. Both the first and last surrogacies had problems with the beta tests. Indicating possible problems from the start. Please comment if anyone knows anything about what I have said. I am glad to have read everything and seen that although I was being weaned off the prog. that I was already taking way more then anyone. That even one 200mg dosage should have been enough. "I hope" I hope my body didn't fail me. I hope that I was also producing my own prog. regardless of it being a surrogacy. Ps. That was my Ip's last chance. IM had a hysterectomy. Those were frozen embies. Thanks and good luck to all of you.

PS. I can't imagine going through a natural miscarrige. I would go through the D&C anytime. I was asleep, woke up, no pain, very little bleeding after 2 days as they clean out most of it. Just my opinion but I would not want to see what comes out. Just my opinion. Thanks.

From what I can tell from researching after my first m/c...hcg and progesterone relate to each other, but are still totally separate issues. Progesterone is considered "normal" if at least at 15 during the start of a pregnancy. Progesterone is what helps sustain the pregnancy. However, if your hcg is not doubling...that's a problem. Whether your progesterone levels are decent or not, if the hcg isn't doubling as expected, that's when most problems and m/c's occur (or at least from what I've personally experienced and what I've had a couple of friend's personally experience). I think progesterone supplements is a tricky subject. I feel that many think that it will save all pregnancies, or are led to believe that if they take it they will sustain a pregnancy after m/c. When, in fact, it may not be a progesterone issue at all causing the m/c(s). Jennifer, I'm not sure what to say on your case. I've only had one friend go thru an IUI which is somewhat different. And that pregnancy did not take either. I would think that the body would need more progesterone in the case of an ivf since your ovary didn't produce the egg which in turn creates the cysts that release progesterone naturally. But I'm not a dr so I'm just guessing on that one. Did they check hcg or progesterone levels on you during the ordeal? And I agree with you on the d&c over the natural m/c. I think I needed the closure, and I think that helped me deal with the loss easier than sitting around waiting for the unexpected.

I have to disagree with D&C over a natural misscarriage. I have had two misscarriages. One happened naturally and the other was a D&C. For me, having it naturally helped me to mentally cope with the loss. I wasn't horribly painful and although you do pa__s the embryo, somehow going through the contractions and losing it as opposed to having it taken out-was so much easier to accept. When I had my D&C I had went in for a check-up on my spotting and didn't know the baby had already died. I was hemorraging so they did an emergency D&C. I went into the office pregnant and came out having misscarried and my mind could not grasp the concept that I had lost the baby. Plus, because of the sudden loss, my body went from having all these hormones to all of sudden not having them and I was sooo sick for about a week. Lea you are correct in your comments about Hcg and Progesterone being two separate issues. Hcg is the pregnancy hormone and if it does not increase then that means the embryo is not developing. Progesterone is prescribed as a safeguard against the possibility that progesterone levels may not be sufficient and may be the cause of spotting or cramping. Most doctors will do this first, before having patients be billed for very expensive testing on genetic defects or other problems. I have been on progesterone for all but two of my pregnancies. The two I didn't take it for were the ones I misscarried and the others yielded two healthy boys and I am now 36 weeks pregnant with my third and am taking 200 mg prometrium daily. I began spotting and having contractions very early in pregnancy and again, began taking prometrium and thank god, it has gotten me this far. For all of you just starting with your pregnancies, hang in there and keep the faith. Progesterone does not prolong an un healthy pregnancy. If there are genetic problems you will misscarry irregardless of taking the hormone or not. However, if hormone levels are the issue then progesterone supplements will help your body maintain the proper level until your placenta is able to take over. Usually at about 12 weeks) Good luck to all and I will pray for all of us to have healthy pregnancies and babies!

I'm not sure how far along I am, around 5 weeks. My HCG is fine, but my progest. level is a 6 and it should be a 11/12. I've been spotting for 2 full weeks and I'm scared too death. I know the stress is worse for my body than anything so I try to stay calm. I will start the cream hopefully today. Thanks for not making me feel so alone!

I ovulated between Aug 8th through Aug 11th. I had blood work done to find this out. My fertility doctor put me on v____al suppositories. I go back for another blood test next week. They want to make sure my prog. levels are higher than 10.2. I will lso find out if I am pregnant. Good luck to all couples out there. I know how it to try. We have been trying for quite a while. G-d answers all prayers! just believe.

I am in exact same situation as Sharon. I had spotting last Saturday. The doctor determined my Progesterone was 9.6 and should be 11. I am on supplements as well, 200mg/twice a day. I had a sonogram today and no heartbeat was visible. (However they said that sometimes it is hard to find this early on.) I have to go back next week. The sonogram people seemed optomistic telling me that my "sac" looked good. I am trying to be positive too, but it is really difficult when you have no idea what is going on! I wish you all the best of luck and feel free to email me at AprilLKenney@verizon.net

Angie M-Hey Angie are you still out there? You should be delivering by now or maybe you already have. Let me know-I have been thinking about you and want to know how you are doing! For everyone else I would like to update you to give you some hope. I have had two misscarriages and two full term, healthy pregnancies. I have been on progesterone since ovulation after having my second misscarriage right before this pregnancy-with that pregnancy I tried not taking progesterone but sadly it ended in misscarriage. My other two children were also concieved and born on progesterone. I am now 36 weeks with my third "progesterone" baby and although I had a few trips to the hospital for pre-term labor, and alot of ups and downs with my levels, I have made it this far and the baby looks great. For all of you just starting out, hang in there! It really does help maintain a healthy pregnancy and even if your levels are really high, your child can still be completely healthy and normal and full-term. Today I actually had to go in a have an external version done because the baby was still breech. That is when the doctor turns the baby from the outside with ultrasound guidance-it hurt like hell but now she is head down, I am dilated 2 cm. and everything looks good. So after this long road of worries, spotting, contractions, progesterone fluctuations etc. my baby girl will be here soon and so will all of your beautiful babes!! I will be thinking of you all so take care of yourselves and just keep up the hope and prayers.

Not sure if this is appropriate or if anyone would even consider it safe since no one knows anyone here. But I was a surrogate that lost the baby early in pregn. See above posts. Well, The meds are purchased under the mothers name and we can't give them back to the pharmacy, besides the fact that I am not sure that it is legal, etc. Pharmacy did it that way though. I have a full, unopened vial of 10ml of PIO prog. in Oil. 50mg/ml, and 18 Prometrium 200MG Vaginal supp. left. My Ip's can't have anymore kids, so they will only go to waste unless I find a fellow surrogate to take them. But most of them are through clinics and not buying the meds. Just like me. I do have about 6 ml in another vile also. But could certainly understand if you didn't want that. Just take it and toss it if you want. I want to give them to someone that has to pay for their meds. Someone that doesn't have insurance to help pay. I will give you my phone number and address. But to keep my Ip's safe, I cannot reveal any information about them or their location. Your doctors can check these out I am sure. I know they are expensive and would really hate to see them wasted. I also have a bunch of shots left. 1ml's and 10ml's. I would appreciate like $5. to cover shipping. If you have paypal, You can pay through there. And you will see that this isn't any kind of hoax, etc I have a long history with ebay. Let me know if you are interested, write me at lmtae2@yahoo.com. Take care all, and good luck.

Michelle - August 18

PS. I have to go first come, first serve. But let me know if you don't need the shots, maybe someone else can use them, even if not for this. But please only those not covered by ins.

I had come to this sight for a different reason (to find out if being on progesterone can cause b___st lumps near under the armpits). I had gone through ivf in may, was on progestrone till 10 week. next day after i stopped the progest., i started spotting (dark brownish blood nonstop for a week) i was able to eventually get an appointment (after a week can you imagine), but the baby was fine (i mean there was a heartbeat, but up to now i don't know if there was something else they found since i haven't discuss things with my dr). the ultr.sund was done on thursday the 4th(on 10 going to 11weeks), bleeding stopped friday(i was happy) and then out of now where started cramping sunday night (7th). called doctor on monday, told me there is nothing she can do but to come in on friday(that will be the 12th). cramping dimished on monday so i thought it was going to go away and was also counting on the fact that just had the ultr sound last thursday and things were fine. tues, cramping picked up with full force and had to call 911 to take me in. personnel in emergency room to their sweet time before paying attention to me all the while i was groaning in a corner. this was the 9th, i got there about 8pm didn't have a sonogram till almost 12am, where my baby had no heartbeat anymore. i could not believe it. i was scheduled for a d&c for last friday (12th) but when i got there i found out they were just going to take out the baby but i wanted another ultr.sound first 'cos i could not believe the baby that was ok last week was suddenly gone. cancelled the d&c 'cos mr dr said she didn't have time for another u/s before the d&c. I had one somewhere else that day where they confimed baby was dead. d&c was done 2 days ago (16th) a day before my birthday ( it was and still is painful). I was scared that a dead baby was inside me the whole week though, and relieved that it was gone because i was scared some other wierd things might start to happen. but anyway, i can here today because i saw a almost protuding lump close to my armpit under my b___st today, and i began to wonder if it was the progetrone i was on for 10 weeks. i am still trying to deal with a lost pregnancy and now i am feeling lumps in my b___st. does anyone has answers? what are the side effects of progesterone supplements?
