Subchorionic Hematoma

Hi, I didn't see my consultant but I saw his registrar who was just as nice and rea__suring. She said my earlier prognosis of 50/50 is no longer so and although she obviously can't give any guarantees and I am high risk, my chances are still pretty good. They are concerned by the size of my hematoma and she is getting me scanned every 4 weeks to check on the growth of the baby as apparently these SCH's threaten the growth of baby as mine appears to be getting larger not smaller. I am also at risk of pre-term delivery because of it but you never know I may get scanned again and the SCH has shrunk (I wish, I wish, I wish) So, I am getting scanned again at 20 wks, 23 wks (routine), 28 wks, 32 wks, 36 wks and I didn't even request it! I am not in the clear but that's my update. Hope all you girls are okay. Kathryn x 16+2

Hello, All! Just wanted to share my good news.... I came from seeing another perinatologist today- He was the first one to really show and explain to me what's going on in there. He showed me where the placenta is pulling away and where the clot is coming from. He said my hematoma is 1.7 x 4.5 cm... I thought that was huge but he said that they determine the chances of a pregnancy surviving by comparing the size of the clot and the size of the empty space in the sac (anyone else hear this??). He said if the clot is bigger than the sac, that is not great news, but he said the space of my baby's sac is 4 times bigger than the clot! And he also seems to think the clot should go away in about 3 more weeks!! YAY! I was so happy I could cry!! and oh yeah, he also told me that it looks like a little boy!! What do you all think of Julian?? =D

Shaz - July 14

Christina, that is wonderful news!! It must be such a relief to talk to someone who can give you some answers! I have had bleeding on & off for the past nearly 3 weeks now but today it looks like it is finally settling down, only when I wipe instead of staining a pad. Congratulations on your little boy, how exciting, and Julian is a lovely name!! Shaz 10w+3

Thank you so much. I just want to say to all of you (though I am not completley out of the woods yet), to hang in there, drink lots of water and pray!! At 9 weeks I had clots so big I just knew I miscarried. I soaked my sweat pants with blood to where it was dripping on the floor. One dr told me that it wasn't looking good. I had very large clots on 3 more occasions after that. Since I miscarried in Jan. I knew not to get my hopes up. It just tore me up when I saw my little guy on the u/s wigglin around. I did not want to loose him!! Now I'm just starting to feel him thumpin and sc___pin- I love him soo much!

Oops, I meant to Shaz, thank you.... That last post is from Christina =)

I am 8 weeks and 5 days and I was just diagnosed with a subchorionic hematoma. I am not bleeding, they found it in the ultrasound. The doctor didn't give me very much info on this. I am on my feet all day at work and wonder if this will make it worse. Do I only need to ask about bed rest if I start bleeding? Does anyone know?

Kathryn - July 15

Dana - bed rest is sometimes advised but I have been told that it doesn't do any good. Justine on here said her SCH got larger when she bed rested! I have a SCH and have bled on and off heavy since week 7. I try to slow down when i am bleeding but apart from that it is business as usual and as I have a 7 mth old baby to look after then it is just as well. I have not noticed any relation to bleeding and activity level. I am now 17 wks. As you have not bled from yours that is great news and my sonographer who identified it said that they see them all the time and they do not consider them a problem so no I don't think you should be doing anything differently. I would carry on as you are. That's what I have been advised anyway. Kathryn x

Christina - That's great news. Julian is a nice name - my husband wants to call the baby Julian if its a boy too. His previous suggestion for a boy was Clement (!!) and Julian is a definate improvement! We have to decide on two names as the baby was hiding at the scan. It's Sophie for a girl. Kathryn - that's good news they've improved you odds and are giving you scans.

THIS SIGHT IS A TRUE GOD SEND! THERE IS NOT A LOT OF INFOMATION ON THIS TOPIC. I AM 25 YRS OLD & THIS IS MY THIRD PREGNANCY. I HAD 2 HEALTHY PREGNANCIES PREVIOUS BOTH A BOY (5) & GIRL (31/2). IN MAY I HADA MISCARRIAGE AT 7 WEEKS AND HAVE TO HAVE A DNC DONE, BECAUSE I WAS TOLD MY BODY WASN'T REJECTING THE BABY, BUT THERE WAS NO HEARTBEAT. I FOUND OUT I AM CURRENTLY PREGNANT 1 MONTH AFTER THE DNC WAS DONE. I NEVER GOT MY CYCLE, SO I'M NOT SURE IF I GOT PREGNANT TO SOON OR WHAT, BUT WAS DIAGINOISED W/ SUBCHORONIC HEMATOMA AT 6WEEKS. I'M NOT SURE OF THE SIZE, BUT HAVE ONLY BLED ONCE AND NOTHING 8 WEEKS AND THE DOC SAYS THE BABY IS GROWING FINE W/ A STRONG HEARTBEAT. MY CLOT IS BELOW WHERE THE BABY IS LOCATED AND I WAS TOLD THAT THAT OF COURSE IT'S NOT GOOD THAT IT'S THERE, BUT IT'S IN THE BEST POSSIBLE POSITION. I AM KEEPING POSISITVE. I NEVER EXPECTED ANYTHING LIKE THIS SINE MY OTHER PREGNANCIES WENT FINE. I AM KINDA CONCERNED BECAUSE OF THE FACT THAT MY DOC HAS NOT PUT ME ON BED REST. I DON'T KNOW IF THAT'S BECAUSE HE DOESN'T SEE THAT BIG OF A THREAT YET? HE ALSO MENTIONED THAT THERE WAS NO MEDICATION THAT I COULD TAKE TO HELP, BUT HAVE READ ABOUT SEVERAL PEOPLE TAKING MEDICATION? SHOULD I CONSIDER FINDING ANOTHER DOC? JUST WANT TO TAKE ALL THE PRECAUTIONS NECESSARY TO HAVE THIS BABY. ALSO, HOW COME I HAVE NOT REALLY BLED YET? I KNOW THIS PROBABLY SOUNDS SO STUPID, BUT I HAVE TO BLEED SOMETIME TO PASS THE CLOT, CORREC

Kathryn - July 16

Jennifer, please do not worry about not being on bed rest. I am currently 17 weeks pregnant and have been bleeding from a SCH since week 7 and have never been advised to be on bed rest. I did question this but have been told by numerous doctors that they do not see that bed rest helps and carrying on as normal does not do any harm. Just as well for me as I have a 7 mth old baby to look after! Sorry to hear of your previous loss, it must have been a shock to have fallen pregnant so quick! Also you do not need to have bled the clot out, a lot of the time your body reabsorbs the clot or area of bleed. I know mine is there but haven't bled from it for 2 and a half wks and I am hoping that may mean that it has been reabsorbed by my body. Please try to be positive and try not to worry about not resting - a lot of us on here are going about our normal business with no bad affects. Kathryn x

Hi everyone, just wanted to post my daughters situation. I have been reading this site for 4 weeks trying to see how everyone else deals with it. My daughter was in having test run (that shouldn't) to find out why she wasn't conceiving but someone forget to read her pregnancy test. They found a baby and immediately send her for an ultra sound -- they found the heart beat and found the baby to be 5 weeks. Since then she has been bleeding. It seems to slow down for awhile and as she got further along it got worse. She spend so much time in the emerg and wasn't getting any answers -- always told that baby was fine and they had no idea why she was bleeding. Finally at 18 weeks they told her she had subchorionic bleed. They also told her that she didnt have to go on bedrest to continue as she was. Two weeks ago at 20 weeks she was so weak and bleeding that she had to go to the hospital. They determined that she had lost so much blood from bleeding for so long that her hemoglobin was down to 62. She had two blood transfusions and was in the hospital for ten days. She is now on very limited movement and will not be able to work for the rest of her pregnancy and is under close watch. Just wanted everyone to keep and eye on how much blood there are losing so that this doesnt happend to them

Kathryn - July 16

Judy - thanks for the advice, personally I have had two very scary bleeds which resulted in me being admitted to hospital and put on drips to replace lost fluids. I am also taking an iron supplement. You are right though, we are so preoccupied with trying to keep our precious babies safe that we forget how low our bloods can go. I hope your daughter and grandchild are okay. Kathryn x

A question for Kathryn please! Kathryn, I see you said that you bled from week 7 but have not bled for 2 weeks now - can I ask how many weeks you bled for and how much there was? I have been bleeding for a week now and it is not enough to even fill a sanitary pad a day, but too much just to wear a panty liner. I have a scan on Wednesday and am freaking out that something may have happened to the baby. Did the bleeding just start to taper off?? Would appreciate your input, thanks.

As some of you know I am having scans done weekly for SCH and the last one I had they said it was getting smaller-Yea, we rejoiced! Until today....I had a scan done and asked if it was still getting smaller or if a week was enough to tell....the tech told me that after comparing her measurements with the last techs measurements that there was no difference. She said the last tech just measured differently than she did. Huh? I was pretty put out. I would rather them tell me there was no change at all than let me believe that everything is getting better. And then my next question is... is it going to this inconsistant every time? I am 20+2 weeks along and have not spotted for 2+ weeks. I feel fine and baby boy is moving all the time now. I have not actually been told the size if the hematoma but on the scans I am seeing things like 1.5cmx9.2. One time it said 2cmx10cm. AND...I thought that having it on the top of the uterus was good, but others say lower is better. I just wish there was some concrete information on this. I feel like I have been on a roller coaster for the last 5 months. Sorry to vent...I figure you guys are pretty safe since I don't really know you. I think I'm having a rough day today.....feeling a little blue.

Kathryn - July 18

Shaz - to be honest, my bleeds followed a pattern of really heavy almost gushing to start with and then after a couple of days just stopped after easing off a bit. Then maybe a few days or a week later heavy bleeding again (always bright red) Like a tap being turned on and off (sorry!) My last admission to hospital (week 11) though was really, really heavy to the point where there was so much blood gughing out that when they tried to do a speculum examination in a&e (er) the doctor couldn't even see my cervix to say whether it was open or shut. They had to wait for a gynaecologist to come and feel if it was open or shut. I have bled like this twice and these bleeds lasted over a week. Mainly a couple of days but sometimes longer like over a week. Always stops and starts though. Hope to help. Kathryn x

I complained to my doctor about concerns that i was having (mostly my instinct about 11 weeks)They did an ultrasound and the baby looked fine but they found the hematoma. After restricting my execise since then and some bleeding i am at 16 weeks and the clot has gotten larger, my doc is more concerned and i am more nervous. I have 3 others at home so i can't bed rest. i thought that i was better, so that ultrasound was depressing. we found out that we are having a girl, which i was hoping for, but i am scared about making it to term
