Subchorionic Hematoma

Donna & Sue, just wanted to let you know that my bleeding has not followed a set pattern either - it started off as brown, got heavier and then turned a v dark red colour. Then I woke one night with bright red. I went to the hospital and they told me I had a lot of blood in my v____a and it was possible I could be miscarrying. We were devastated. But, I had a scan the next day and there he/she was. They also told I would just have to wait and see and that there is no proof lying around all day would make any difference. I did rest a lot more and restricted the amount of house work I did but I have been increasing this over the past 4-5 days and it hasn't seemed to make any difference, however my bleeding is a lot lighter and infrequent now. I know this sounds idiotic but try not to stress, and I also did positive affirmations every day and night telling myself that the hematoma is shrinking and the bleeding is stopping - something worked!! Everyone just hang in there. There seems to be hope out there. We all just need to beleive that God will take care of things. I' ll keep you updated.

Hi, I wrote earlier about my hematoma. Nothing has changed, I'm now 11+3 weeks pregnant (if I still am...) and have had heavy bleeding every week since week 5. Doctors are tired of scanning me and have said that I shouldn't come back to the er again unless I pa__s parts of the featus! I really don't feel they take me seriously. Sue - I also have a thyroid disease since many years but have been on madication. I wonder if it has something to do with this condition.

Kathryn - July 21

Johanna - same boat as you. Currently 17+3 so getting there but I have bled heavy on and off since week 7. They do not scan me any more with each episode of bleeding. It's bad isn't it, they are basically saying to us, do not come in unless you really think you are miscarrying. They expect us to sit at home bleeding bright red blood and that's that. My hospital is the same. I think it depends on what hospital you are at. I am sure baby is fine though - I have had some wicked bleeds and our baby is still okay. Hope that you start to get taken a bit more seriously soon. They don't realise that we worry so, so much. Kathryn x

Kathryn, Shaz, and Johanna- I really appreciate your thoughts on this. I know how it feels to not be taken seriously by the doctors. During my first pregnancy, I was at first only seeing a midwife and I kept going into the office with the spotting. I kept telling them I felt like something was wrong, but the midwife told me that some women bleed and I was just going to be one of those women. Instead of trying to calm my fears, I just got ignored, I felt like anyways. I did talk with a nurse at my thyroid drs office this morning and was telling her about my condition. She said she also experienced a subchorionic hematoma in her 2nd pregnancy and the hospital told her she had miscarried because they could not find anything. A week later she had blood work done and her hormone levels had tripled and the ultra sound revealed there was something there. Just hearing these other stories really gives me hope. As far as the thyroid condition goes, the drs have not said that it is related to the subchorionic hematoma so I'm not sure that there is a connection. Love and prayers Sue

I am 33 weeks pregnant ani i was admitted into the hospital for some bleeding.i bled that day and it never happened again.they gave me an ultrasound and every week i have to get an nst test.I'm at home now on bed rest but they diagnosed me with a marginal placenta and a clot on there.i am so afraid because they were planning on taking him out.i am going to stay in bed until about 36 weeks so i can have a full term baby.this is so scary and i hope everything works out for me and everyone else.my baby is already 4 pounds 6 ounces the last time i checked.i was given a drug to help mature his lungs in case i went into labor.i get a few cramps sometimes but i was told by my doctor to just get bed rest .now im being really cautious.good luck to all.

I have wrote in previously. I was told about this condition when I was 6 weeks along. I only had bleeding for the first day and now I am nine weeks and woke up this morning to brown blood. This is so scary for me becuase I just had a miscarriage in May and had to have a dnc done. Is this browinsh stuff normal & what does it mean? Plz help, I am so scared!!! Thanks.

Kathryn - July 21

Jennifer - sorry you are going thru this but brown blood is nearly always nothing to worry about. You know you have a SCH so it was either going to bleed out or get reabsorbed and it seems yours is bleeding out now and the brown is good. Speak to your health carers anyway but I would say you don't have to be too alarmed although any bleeding is really scary I know from experience. Kathryn x

Hi Sue, Johanna, Janet & Kathryn - and everyone else!!!! Sue I cannot believe they do not scan you - they should be giving you a scan to put your fears at rest at the very least - I know the last 3 I have had I have been terrified something bad may have happened but it has all been fine and I am sure I am going to be fine now. But I know what you mean about being ignored - in my case the hospital dr's have been all doom and gloom and not given me any hope!! So I am sticking with my specialist who has told me from the beginning he was optomistic and has been positive every time there has been a crisis! I am still spotting - thought it was going to stop but no, last night it was here we go again - but not a lot so I count myself lucky. Talk soon, Shaz

Sabrina - July 21

HI-just an update...I had my weekly scan done and my SCH is still there and not getting any smaller but not growing either. I have not spotted brown for three weeks now. I am 21 weeks now and baby looks great! Very active and already waking me up from a deep sleep. One thing that I was told recently was that when I deliver, if the SCH is still there, that it would just shed out and be gone as my uterus delivers everything else. They said I most likely will not need a DNC. Does this sound consistant with what others have been told?? I am still choosing to be off bedrest and have had so much fun doing a little shopping for the babies room. Focusing on that seems to help me stop worrying.

Kathryn - July 22

Sabrina, good for you darl, you are coping amazingly. I too have taken myself off of any form of rest. Both myself and my consultant realised that it was not doing any good for my state of mind with a 7 mth old baby to look after. don't get ne wrong, I have my worrying moments, but generally I am happier getting on with my life and I have heard so many stores that it is fine to do this. You gave me strength reading your update, I also get a scan at 20 wks so hope to report good news soon. Take care, Kathryn x 17+4

Hi everyone, I wrote in just yesterday. I am 9 wks along & had brown blood only when I wiped yesterday a couple of times. I was told about this when I was 6 wks. I only bled for 1 day & now the brown blood has stopped also. Why aren't I bleeding? What is going on w/ the clot? Kinda confused. Any answers would help. All the other stories I've read everyone else has been bleeding for days, weeks? Help!

Sabrina - July 22

Hi Jennifer- I had two bleeding times, one at 8 weeks and one at 15 weeks. Both times I pa__sed a clot and had bright red blood but it only lasted a day or two at the most. From 8 weeks through 15 weeks I never spotted anything red or brown or even pinkish. Then at 15 weeks I had lots of bright red blood and was soaking a pad an hour for the first three hours, then by day two it tappered off. From then until 19 weeks I spotted only brownish type show only when I wiped and I never had to wear a panty liner because it was so mild. Now I am 21 weeks and have not had any spotting for three weeks. I tell you all this to say that I don't think there is a set pattern. My body will do what what my body is going to do, just like yours will. I know that these SCH do absorb so maybe that's why you are not "bleeding." Maybe I bled because I was not absorbing as much as I should have been. I find that the more I know about this the less I really know because these cases are never textbook. I'm not totally sure my Dr. knows all there is to know about it. They are making educated guesses about 60% of the time. You know your body....if you feel great and don't sense something is truely wrong then your job is to look forward to planning your life with a new baby, picking names, finding nursery themes, relishing those first kicks and a whole lot of waiting just like the rest of us with a SCH. I try to focus on the good days and not worry about what may happen, but that is NOT always easy. I wish all the best for you. Keep asking lots of questions, knowledge can bring peace if you let it.

Anne - July 25

Hi, it's great to find information somewhere! I have a hematoma - finally had the real ultrasound last week, but haven't heard how big. I bled at weeks 5 and 6, but not since (now I'm 9 wks). It looked bigger in the ultrasound to me though; hopefully I'll find out what's going on. I have an apt. Wed.. I'm scared though because I'm not tired or as hungry as I have been; still out of breath though. I hope everything is ok. This is all very scary.

anita - July 26

Hi anne, hope everything is ok w/ your pregnancy. This is the first time I have come across this forum. I'm 9 weeks also and was tld i have a hematoma. I have had 2 big scares & had to go to the emerg room. Not from any bleeding but just pain. My last ultrasound i got to see my baby & hear his heart. But it scares me too that i haven't been as nauseaus anymore. My next appt is not until 8/18/05 but before then I have requested my medical records to see how large the hematoma is. I was researching on the internet & saw where some studies where done. They say they saw more miscarriages in women over 30 with large hematoma's. Large being larger than 13.2 cm. Small being 13.1 cm & under. They say younger woman w/ smaller hematoma's have a better chance @ not miscarriaging. My original dr sd that his wife had a hematoma up until she delivered. I hope that is not the case w/ me or anyone else in here! Anyone else heard anything like this?

kathleen - July 26

With my first pregnancy I had a small subchorionic that resolved by 11 weeks. My daughter is now 2. However, I wasn't so lucky this time. I had a very large one that wrapped half way around the uterus. I would hemorrage and clot ma__sively every few days. I was put on bed rest, and unfortunately I still lost the baby at 11 weeks. It is very scary, and my heart goes out to all who are going through this.
