I have a question, did you by chance have a c-section? I had wonderful, easy, 3-day periods before my c-sections, after my last baby I started having horrific periods with tremendous pain, heavy bleeding and huge clots that lasted for 7-9 days! It never got better and after suffering for quite awhile I was diagnosed with adenomyosis, an abnormal uterine condition where the lining of the uterus grows into the muscles of the organ (due I was told to the c-section method of delivery). I personally had to have a hysterectomy, but I am not suggesting you are at that point at all. If you had a v____al delivery you may have several more like this before you get regulated hormonally. I would discuss this with your OB/Gyn if it continues.
