Postpartum Horror

Hello Ladies, I just wanted to tell you my story. I deliver my beautiful baby girl on January 1, 2006. The delivery went will, expect for one thing. My doctor left a sponge inside of me. My nurses nor my doctor never remove the sponge from my va___a. I was also never told I had a sponge inside of me. So after three days I was discharge. I did have an episiotomy which I thought was the reason for all the extreme pain I was having. After two weeks, the pain was getting worse; I couldn’t hardly walk or stand up right. Not only was I experiencing horrible pain but I also had strong odor coming from va___a. My friends, who had children before told me that the pain I was having is unusual. They then proceed to tell me to call my doctor. I took my friend advice and call the doctor; the nurse proceeded to tell me the pain I was experiencing was normal. Once I got of the phone with the nurse, I decide to take a warm shower to help lessen the pain. While I was taking a shower, I notice a huge bump coming from my va___a area. The thought that immediately came to my mind was that I had an infection and that my va___a was swollen. I then decide to listen to my own body and go the hospital. This is where I found out about the Sponge. When the doctor pulls the sponge out, the odor was so strong and the sponge itself was wet and black. Image the horror I felt that the sponge was inside all of this time, the cause of all that pain and the strong order. The sponge was basically creating bacteria and eating away the wall of my va___a. I was discharge with antibiotic for unary tract infection and for the bacteria found instead my va___a due to the sponge. I just wanted to share this story because it needed to be told. LADIES LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. YOUR BODY NEVER LIES!!!

IT"S SO HORRID! My good friend is an RN and this thing happens more often than you think. I don't know how these people get away with stuff like that. I'm so glad that you are on your way to recovery!

How awful. Yes it is true that we must listen to our bodies.

That's unacceptable. Take care of yourself and Sue!

I'm so sorry to hear this happened to you. Unfortunately, I can relate because this also happened to me in 2001 after the birth of my son. A sponge was left inside me, and despite 2 visits to my ob, including a complete v____al exam (manual and with speculum) it was not found. I discovered it myself --3 WEEKS after giving birth--while taking a bath. It was HORRID and I was literally in shock upon finding it. I had been in extreme pain, unable to sit upright, taking painkillers, etc. All of this while trying to take care of my newborn son. Upon removing it I bled bright red blood for two days, very scary! Of course I had a horrible infection, which had to be treated. Emotionally I was a wreck, just livid that I had suffered needlessly, and that I was unable to give my full attention to my baby because of the pain I was in. My advice? Doc_ment your whole experience in writing then make an appointment with the office manager of your ob practice. Explain exactly what happened to you, describe how you suffered and ask for a financial settlement. No one wants to be party to a lawsuit, especially a doctor, but they made a mistake and you suffered horribly and should, in some way, be compensated. Put it toward's your little girl's college fund, or something meaningful to make some good of your horrible experience. Additionally ask the practice to offer you any and all followup care necessary to ensure you will not suffer any reprecussions from their mistake. Infections from something like this can potentially cause damage to your v____al walls and the lining of your uterus. In fact, I have had two miscarriages since the birth of my son and in the back of my mind I wonder if the sponge left inside me could possibly have something to do with it. (I have had initial tests done and everything else points to normal; awaiting an appt with a reproductive endocrinologist now). Above all else, don't take what happened to you lightly, this was a horrific medical mistake. And continue to share your story with other women, when this happened to me I had never heard of it before. Feel free to contact me at iloveuf@aol.com if you wish to discuss further. I'll be happy to help however I can. Julie

Hi - February 22

I am one person who knows ALL too well how this feels.I can honestly say i know exactly how you feel.It happened to me too!!! I discovered mine about 8 days after i gave birth.I thought i had a st_tch that was infected or something.I also know what you mean with the smell.I called my doc. told him i thought something was wrong and what i felt.He told me to go to the hospital and wait for him,see no one but him.So i go and he was there b4 me so i didn't have to wait.I go into the room strip from waiste down and he practically rips the d__n thing out of my v____a throws it in the garbage and says he needs a bigger glove. He wrapped up the sponge or gauze in the glove to cover his a**.So my husband demands he pull it out of the garbage. To make this shorter you can't sue a doctor for something like this unless you have permanent damage.I tried i was sick for weeks .I know it's horrible to experience. But i tell you ,I've told every doctor since then about it and it hasn't happened again.Sorry to hear someone else went through this too.Keep your head up.It happened to me in 1996.You never forget it,but you can get past it.God Bless
