I had a baby 6 months ago and my doctor says my thyroid is enlarged and acting abnormal. NOW I get to go swallow a radioactive pill to see what the heck is going on. Has anyone else had to do thisor had something like this after having a baby????

I am dealing with a thyroid issue as well. I was diagnosed with an enlarged thyroid (6 months postpartum) that they diagnosed as hypothyroidism – this was all diagnosed by accident. I went to the doctor for a cold and he came back and said I have a thyroid problem. The first doctor that diagnosed me was not my gp because she was out on medical leave. So I asked if I could hold out until my gp returns before making any decisions on medication because this doctor wanted me to start taking thyroid replacement hormones. My gp has returned from medical leave and I did go see her last week. She agreed with the first doctor that I do have hypothyroidism and likely Hashimoto’s disease. I specifically asked if this could be related to pregnancy as I had seen that pregnancy can bring on temporary thyroid issues. This was dismissed as 5% of women get Hashimoto’s disease after pregnancy, but this does not hold true with what I have researched. I am having a hard time believing I have a thyroid problem because I have no family history of thyroid disease, nor did I have any issues with my thyroid before pregnancy. I just had some more blood work done and an ultrasound done this week. I am waiting to get the results back from my doctor. In the meantime, I have been researching more about thyroid disorders and I have come across postpartum thyroiditis. There is some good information online at the American Thyroid a__socciation on the subject. If you have problems finding information, let me know and I can email you the information directly. Bottom line is that 5-10% of women get this and it resolves itself in 80% of women. The other 20% have the disorder forever. I feel that the doctor’s I’ve seen just want to say I have a thyroid problem and take a pill. If that is what I need to do, I will, but I first want someone to tell me that I do not have postpartum thyroiditis. Let me know how your thyroid issues work out – I am interested to hear as it may help me understand what I am dealing with. Take care.
