Unfortunately, you are at an increased risk for a repeat of postpartum depression. Talk with your health pract_tioner and partner to make a plan. Some women choose to start medication at the end of the pregnancy to avoid ppd. A recent study showed that antidepressants given within 12 hours after birth seemed to prevent a reoccurence of ppd. In Canada a study showed that women who got good night time sleep after the baby was born reduced the risk of ppd. Remember that sometimes the symptoms are not always depression, but sometimes irritablility, anxiety and mental conusion may be prominant features of postpartum depression. Meet with a therapist trained in ppd to plan out a "safety net". You can find someone in your area at www.postpartum.net (Postpartum Support International). I have co-authored a book, Beyond the Blues, A Guide to Understanding and Treating Prenatal and Postpartum Depression (www.beyondtheblues.com or at amazon.com) that explains in more detail, and offers support to you and your family. Best wishes.
