How Effective Is Misoprostol Is Swallowed

Im confused about this because I was reading a news article the other day where some guy did a horrible thing. He put misoprostol in his girlfriends food when she didnt know and she later had a miscarriage at 16 weeks. I always thought that misoprostol had to be done vaginally or under the tongue to be effective. So how was this possible for her to do orally even thought she was so far along in the pregnancy?
