Symptoms Of Blighted Ovum

Worried, I had a d&c on Wednesday due to a blighted ovum. I never miscarried it. The embryo stopped developing around week 6 and the sac continued to grow slowly therefore still putting off hormones and giving me pregnancy symptoms. My only clue that something might be wrong was brown discharge that occurred for about an hour on two consecutive days. I had never had this with my two successful pregnancies. I was supposed to be in my ninth week, went for my first appointment, did an ultrasound due to the minor spotting, and went for a d&c a few days later. I really had no symptoms. The dr thought I would probably carry the sacs another month or so because they were in such good shape. I am so glad after my d&c that my b___sts have quit hurting, my nausea is gone, and the heartburn has stopped. I still am very fatigued, but I am only two days out of it. I think as far a symptoms go, each person is different. You may have to get forceful with the dr office and let them know how stressed you are and why. The stress is not good for the baby! Wishing you luck.

I sufferred a b/o on July 14th. I didn't really feel pregnant like I had in my two previous successful pregnancies. Once I had some spotting I knew it was over. The u/s confirmed an empty sac measuring 5 weeks 1 day when I should have been at least 8 weeks pregnant. I stopped bleeding on July 22nd. Today (July 25th) I woke up with some severe cramping and my HCG level was checked at 21. I need to go back in 48 hours to make sure it is going down to zero. I just want this to be over.

Hi, well just came about this web site and I feel at home. About 4 months ago I was diagnosed with having a blighted ovum. It was on my son's 2nd year birthday 02/03/05. It was devastating to me and my husband. I had all the pregnancy systoms and at 8 weeks I noticed some red blood spotting and then brown. I went to the emergency room and the doctor gave us the bad news. I cried and my husband did too when he told us there was no n HB. It feels like loosing a child. The doctor offered a d&c but I told him that if it was ment to be that way that it would happened naturally. 2 weeks later I started to have some cramping. It felt like early labor pains. I then got some more bleeding and then felt some rushing liquids, like if my water broke. After that I felt like going to the restroom and I pa__sed the sac which was scary and depressing. After this the cramping stopped, for several days I had some tissue and I guess blood clots and it was like it never happened. I am sorry I am being so graphic but maybe someone that hasnt gone through this might get an idea of what will probably happen. Well, my anxiety is that I am pregnant again, I am so scare and worried. Today I noticed some greenish discharge and I called my doctor which said it was normal. Does any one know if this might be a symptom of this condition. I do not want to go through this again. Please let me know if anyone has had any of this discharge before the mc. Thanks

My husband and I had tried for 6 months to get pregnant with our second child. I found out on 7/26 that I had a blighted ovum at my 9 week u/s. There was no fetus in the sac and it was only measuring 5 weeks. My doctor does not like to perform D&C's, so he gave me Misoprostol, 800 mcg v____ally, to start the miscarriage process. I did not want to wait because the pregnancy had ended 4 weeks previously and I was at risk for infection. We started the misoprostol wednesday morning and I started cramping within 30 minutes. I wasn't sure what to expect...I mean, I didn't know if I'd know when I'd pa__s the tissue. My OB had said that I'd have lots of cramps and larger clots. Well, last night, about 60 hours after I took the misoprostol, I definately pa__sed the tissue. Not to sound gross, but it was a piece of bloody tissue larger than my thumb. Just prior to pa__sing the pregnancy, I had started to bleed very heavy for about 3 hours and I was changing pads every 30-45 minutes. Once it was over, the cramps and bleeding slowed down and today I feel like I'm just having a mentral cycle. I must say that the thing that has kept me sane through this process is knowing that it was a "bad" pregnancy to begin with and that my body realized it and stopped it before it went further. Yes, I'm sad to lose the pregnancy, but I think I'm more frustrated than anything. Six months to get pregnant, two months into the pregnancy to lose it, and then another 4-6 weeks to get my period before I start again....that takes us to almost a year of trying. I was fortunate to get pregnant with my daughter in two cycles...and I'm obese and have hypothyriodism! For anyone who has a blighted ovum, I must warn that if you choose to take misoprostol, ask your OB for pain meds...it was if I was in labor again! Best wishes to everyone ttc after their loses.

I just found out I'm pregnant, 7/31/05, and went to the ER for fear of ectopic and they found 2 sacs in uterus, yet no fetal pole/yolk sac. I don't understand! I can't tell if I'm losing my symptoms of pregnancy yet, but I know that's a sign. I should be approx. 6 wks menstrual age, but who knows for sure! I am going to my ob/gyn 1st thing in the morning to get a BHCG reading....

Pam - August 1

Julie, I went through a similar thing back in June. I should have been almost 10 weeks and things stopped develoing around 5 weeks. I opted for the misoprostol too and boy was it painful! My doc only gave me motrin, it didn't do anything for the pain! Luckily I had a friend that had darvacet and that took the edge off. I started craming after 20 minutes and 4 hrs. later I pa__sed the sac etc. The cramping lasted about 24 hrs. I don't think I would ever go that route again, it was scary! My Dr. wants me to wait 2 full cycles before we try again due to the meds, you don't want to get pregnant the first month after taking the meds, they can cause birth defects. It took me 5 weeks to get my first period, I guess I will be able to try after my next cycle. Good luck to you! Best wishes, Pam

Pam, sorry you had to go through this also. I go in tomorrow to see if everything pa__sed. I was doing really well this weekend and last night (I work night shift). In fact, I thought that the bleeding was slowing down. Then, this afternoon I got hit with some nasty cramps...I'm talking about as bad as labor. Back pains and all. The bleeding picked up again, but not as bad as Friday night. I called to OB's office to ask if this was normal since I had already pa__sed the pregnancy and they told me misoprostol can have "wave" like effects even after the pregnancy pa__ses. I'm still going to mention this to my OB because I got extremely nauseated. I hope nothing is stuck because I want to avoid a D&C at all costs. My OB did say I could start to try to conceive *after* I had my first menstral cycle. So, hopefully we'll have it by October. I'm scared because a coworker got pg in April, m/c'ed at 8 weeks (blighted ovum), got pg right away, and m/c'ed again at 10 weeks this weekend (a second blighted ovum). Now, I know they say there is a 85% of carrying a perfectly healthy baby after a blighted ovum, but, I'm still scared. In the mean time, I plan on snuggling extra hard with my beautiful to year old, Laura. Best of luck for a happy and healthy pregnancy!

Julie - August 1

Dedra, 6 weeks is awfully early to tell if anything is wrong. When I was pregnant with my daugther, I thought I, too, was having a miscarriage and went to the ER at 20dpo (right around 5 weeks). All they could see was a sac. We didn't get an ultrasound until 9 weeks and that was when we saw the heartbeat. I didn't really get any symptoms with her until I was at least 8weeks. This time, I had sore b___sts even up to the point I found out the pregnancy was a blighted ovum. Best thing to do is get betas done every couple of days. In about a week or so, they should hear a heartbeat. I will certainly pray everything works out for you.

Hello Ladies. 3 years ago I miscarried due to a blighted Ovum. 2 months later I was pregnant again and was put on progesterone suppositories. I now have a beautiful 2 1/2 year old. I am not certain if it was the progesterone that helped or all the praying. get your progesterone levels checked the minute you find out you are pregnant again. Progesterone is the most important hormone that supports early pregnancy right before your placenta takes over.

Julie - August 30

I was told a blighted ovum is not due to progesterone levels. It's instead a chromosomal problem with either the egg or sperm in which the body recognizes a problem and the pregnancy fails to progress.

I had a miscarriage due to a blighted ovum on August first, I had to have a D&C. I don't really think there is any way to know if you are going to have one or not. I still had all the symptoms of pregnancy, I was 11 weeks when I went to my first doc appt. and thats when they found out there was no baby in my 11 week sac. My b___st were huge and extremely sore, i felt sick all the time but never threw up, and when i would take a home pregnancy test through out the 11 weeks it always said positive. My advice to you is to see if you can go get blood work done to make sure your levels are still going up. I have a friend who was pregnant and was 8 weeks pregnant before it would even show up on a home test, and she had no problems and had her baby just fine. I also had a friend who got pregnant on accident and didn't find out she was pregnant till she was 5 months along, she said she always had irregular periods so she didn't suspect anything, she said she wasn't sick or anything. So i think the lack of symptoms doesn't always turn out to be bad.

While but a year ago i didn't have mymonthly for almost a year so i got these medication to get my mentral back. So it help and i had unprotected s_x and Iknow that he put some sperm in me and i wasn't pregnant. How those this happen?

Maria - September 7

I had a misscariage two months ago due to a blighted ovum, and I had all of the pregnancy symptoms. I lost the pregnancy in the 6th week and my OB monitored my pregnancy every two weeks by ultrasounds and we coul only se the sack but no heartbeat. Maybe you are pregnant and the cause is not a blightend ovum. Don´t worry Im sure everything will be fine. It´s important you stay calmed.

Marge - September 7

Change your OB! What do you mean she/he won't see you until you are 10 weeks? You will just keep on worrying and affect what is a healthy pregnancy. I just had a miscarriage with a blighted ovum. Had a D&C last August 31st. Found out when I was 7 weeks and 2 days pregnant after undergoing 3 ultrasound from 5 weeks. There are no symptoms as the other girls put it you can only know after undergoing several ultrasound test. What happened to me was, at 5 weeks, u/s showed no gestational sac when it should have, then at 6 weeks, I had a sac and a yolk sac but the sac was irregular in shape and there was subchorionic hemorrhage around the sac. After a week went for another u/s and there was nothing in the sac anymore, no yolk, no fetus and the size of the sac was too small for my supposedly age of 7 weeks. This is my first pregnancy. So I did not wait to naturally m/c since i wanted to just move on and not have to wait and wait til it happens. It's been 8 days after the d&c and I am fine. One thing you can also have done is check levels of HCG if it is rising then that is a good sign but when it is dropping then that is not so good. But the best thing is have a u/s done. At 8 weeks you should have a sac and the fetus but if no fetus then wait again for another 2 weeks then have scan done again. The sac should have grown 1mm per day from last scan and the fetus should have developed if it is not a blighted case. Email me directly margedeleon@yahoo.com, if you need more advice. BUt as for now, please do not stress yourself worrying it is not good for your unborn child. NO symptoms of pregnancy is not a sign of a blighted believe me, I had all the symptoms and still was b/o. SO just be happy and smile and say "Yehey! I am Pregnant!" I know it can be tough aftr 2 m/c but as a mom you should be strong for your baby, because he/she will be feeling all your emotions and we want him/her to feel positive ones. Don't worry, God has his plans for you.
