Has anyone chose to have the early CVS testing? I am 40 years old and almost 8 weeks pregnant. So far, had a little spotting week 6, but positive heartrate on us. This was an unexpected but welcome pregnancy. My son is 17 and has had many medical issues deafness (uses a coclear implant), severely delayed motor skills, and at 14 ganglioneuroblastoma. I just dont know if I can go through this all again-financially or emotionally. I would love to hear from women who had advanced prenatal testing. As a nurse, I know enough to skip the triple screen at my age. Thanks, kat.

I am 42 just had my second who is 4 1/2 months. I had the triple screen and it came back great 1:5300 or soemthing for DS and my NT was 1.3mm. Don't fear this. Do the NT scan between 11 and 13 weeks and this will give you a clear idea as to weather or not you should do CVS.
I have also had 5 losses and I have two children in total so I am no stranger to the many tests when things go wrong. I however had a pregnancy with an elevated NT where the hb was seen. I lost this pregnancy. I was to have CVS but the baby died just days before the sampling. I had genetic testing done and nothing genetically was wrong with the fetus. Just be smart do the required testing..especially at your age. It may save you alot of heartache in the end and it can give you an indicator as to how things are progressing.
good luck.

Thanks for the information Kristin. So just as I am relaxing a bit, the MD calls me about my us done almost 2 weeks ago saying the heartrate was low at 103. I am reading conflicting info regarding the rates. Do you have any experience with this. Of course if it is too painful to discuss, I respect that. Also, did you have the CVS with this baby? Congrats on your little one-BEAUTIFUL!!! kat

Hi katlady, Sorry to hear your MD said the heartrate was low. I have to look into this more..but a low heart rate can be just that a low or heart rate..I think you should get another ultrasound done.Doctors like to see a heartrate of atleast 120..and more like 135-165. Some heartrates in babies that are even lower than your babies have gone to term and nothing at all is wrong. Other times it can be a bad sign or an inevitable miscarriage.
I did not have CVS or amnio with this baby as my doctor did not even suggest it since my tests were very good.
With one of my past pregnancies the one that ended at 14 weeks. The heart rate was fine..I was spotting and at my NT scan the number was 4mm. This was so devastating for me. I had to get genetic couselling and I was told to prepare for the worst. They scheduled my CVS and when I went in they did an ultrasound and asked me to cough several times..the doc just looked at me.. I knew something was wrong..and she wrote down on the paper fetal demise.
Anyway, I know you must be very anxious about this news..but please do not fret...your baby needs you to be strong..you are at such a crucial stage of your pregnancy and you are dealing with very small fragile cells. Try to rest as much as you can..drink lots of water..and like I said get another ultrasound to check on things. IF all goes well..get your tests done..and hopefully the rest of your pregnancy will be happy and healthy.
In my opinion you are still young..many many women over 40 are having healthy babies all the time.
FYI..I had my first at 39 and my second just a week after my 42 birthday. My first loss happended in Dec 2005..and then 3 more consecutive pregnancy losses between 2007 (an ectopic) and 2008 a missed miscarriage and a chemical pregnancy..I was [pregnant 3 times in a row and the third one stuck...my little girl born in September.
Let me know how things go for you..and if you have anymore questions I will try to let you know what I know. Hoping all goes well. :)

Kristin, Again thank you for your knowledge, and the willingness to share it with me. Yes, it is stressful, but if it is meant to be, it will happen. I am trying to relax...not easy. I will let you know. Thank you. God bless. Enjoy your babies!!!
