hi there,
I'm sorry, I'm not sure as I haven't had one. Are they saying "you have to have one because your over 35". Or is there more reason than that? Some dr's lead you to believe that just because of age you need to which is untrue.

Hi simone29, I'm in Australia and haven't had an amnio. We did look into it and I was told it is only a little bit uncomfortable, not painful at all. We have been told that in the US they routinely do amnio for over 35s. I'm 40 and 32 weeks and after researching it decided it was unnecessary. All I can say is do your own research and make the decision that is right for you. Good luck.

Hi Simone. I haven't had it done but I may have to depending on results I get from the ultrasound and blood test screening I'm having done tomorrow. Why do you have to have an amnio? Did you do other screening first before deciding you have to do it or do you just feel better if you have it done?

Hi simone, I've done it with both my children, it as hurts as taking any blood test - the feeling of a syringe (nothing to worry about). The preparation may make you a little anxious (you are being laid down, they cover you with sterile blanket,, they wait for the doctor to come in, etc) - that may increase your level of discomfort, but it is really nothing. I closed my eyes both times. After, I asked them to show me the vial with the drawn fluid (nice and clear) and off I went.
