Is DS related to family history? My husband's sis has a DS child? Does this increase my chances of having one? Pls tell me. Am 28 years old.

Sohpiya- One's chances of having a child with Downs increase with age, espoecially after age 35 and after age 40. Most cases are NOT genetic, but there is one rare form that is genetic. My cousin has the gene and had a 1 in 4 chance of having a DS child with each pregnancy. She had a child with DS in her 20s-very rare. Gentic testing is VERY expensive and if yous sis-in-law's Dr. did not suspect the DS was the gentic form I would not worry. Also, I think, if I remember correctly the gentic form may be pa__sed through the mother not father. Check with a Dr. because this could be partially wrong. All I know is that there is a rare gentic form.

I am 37 y.o. & on my 18th weeks of pregnancy. This is my first pregnancy. I was referred to a perinatologist by my OB doc because of my age. Triple test wasn't recommended to me because when determining the risk for DS, the "bell curve would lean more towards the risk because of my age." The US showed everything was normal except this "calcium deposit" on the fetus's heart. The doc said this is only a 1/2 marker & because everything else was normal, that I shouldn't worry about it. He said that this is seen from both women that are younger & older of 35 years of age. My husband & I have no history of DS. Even after told by my doc that there is nothing to worry about & the babies are born with "0 problems." There is still a bigger part of me that is worried, otherwise, I wouldn't stumble upon this website. I find this website very helpful & offers rea__surance & big hope. My due date is at August. I will continue to log on to this website for new updates & I will likewise do the same. So I just want to introduce myself to everyone. Thanks for everyone of you for taking the time to share your situation with us. Because no one will ever understand the situation far better than the ones who is actually living the situation.

Hi,
My doctors found out dilated kidney of my baby when I was 22 weeks pregnant and recommended me to Maternal-Fetal Medicine Doctors and after going there, they gave me another news that the baby also has white spot on his heart, and I was having follow up ultrasounds every 3-4 weeks . My whole pregnancy I was worried sick and prepared my self for the worse. But thanks to God and people who prayed for me I delivered a healthy baby boy, he is one and half month today and everything is fine. I know it is difficult to stop worrying, but have faith in God and my prayers are there for all worrying mothers.
Good luck

I posted back in October 2005 because my baby boy had an echogenic focus in the left ventricle and bilateral renal dilation (5.1mm) on the 18 week US. Two soft markers with a 1:94 chance of a DS baby according to the ultrasound and I was advised to have an amnio; which I declined. My baby was born last week perfectly healthy, absolutely gorgeous and no DS. I worried for 5 months about the possibility of a DS baby and had a very stressful pregnancy as a result. The worry was all for nothing. I wish everyone all the best with their pregnancy. God bless!

Dear Patty,
I also was told that my baby had a foci spot and that the risk of downs was minor. I am 20 weeks into my pregnancy. They asked for my quad test and that was negative, so they told me i had nothing to worry about. The doctor said it should go away and if it dont it will be born with a heart mummer which is normal. They told me that too should go away. So you're not alone in this. But in my heart i believe everything is going to be just fine. I will pray for both you and your baby, hope everything comes out fine with you and your son.

Ladies,
I also was informed that my baby boy showed a white spot on his heart, but the my Doctor said it's common. He only had to inform me because of my age. You see I am 39 years old, he said that out of the 15 other women he had seen that day 4 others had it, but he didnt mention it to them because they were under 35. Thanks to all you women for all your comments, they comfort me some. I will be seeing my doctor again on Tuesday and will ask for another u/s and refuse the amnio.

Hi everyone, I am 23 and was told on 3/17/06 our daughter has an Echogenic Focus in her heart . I go for another higher level ultrasound tomorrow and Iam still waiting for the AFP results. I wish I could have found this website earlier....My doctor said chances of downs is low but it still has me so very worried...so I just pray that she will be fine.

Hi, I'm 31 and went in for my 20 week Level 2 ultrasound. I was so excited about finding out about the baby's gender but then the technician/doctor pointed out the Echogenic Foci in the heart and then a cyst in the head. I was SO worried and scared. As soon as I left the hospital, I started bawling. Well, guess what? I had an Amnioscentisis to find out if there was down syndrome or trisomy and I got the preliminary FISH results back and the baby is perfectly fine and healthy. I was so worried that I couldn't sleep. The doctors told me that the soft markers itself are not uncommon in developing babies around 20 weeks or so. I hope that my posting helps or at least rea__sures you to know that a soft marker doesn't mean down syndrome/trisomy. Best wishes. xo
