I am 37, have a girl of 4 and we're thinking in a second child. We're concerned about the increased risk of genetic disorders in the baby. I would like to know opinions, tips or which considerations did other moms take.

I had my first baby (and she's healthy) at 42 and am pregnant with my second at 43. There are some new genetic tests you can take. Have your OB refer you to genetic counseling before you get pregnant so you are aware of all your options and risks. Good luck!

I hate to be the one to cast any doubt, but the fact is that the risks for chromosomal disorders do climb considerably after age 35. I knew so many older women who had perfectly healthy children, so I also thought that I would have no issues. I was wrong. My pregnancy was going perfect until the technician noted abnormalities on my sono the day of my amniocentesis. I had several sonos prior to this that were considered normal. You could imagine my horror and shock when he testing came back positive for Trisomy 18, a fatal chromosomal disorder. The pregnancy was terminated the following week. I had 6 miscarriages prior to that and 2 beautiful children.
As horrible as that ordeal was, I am pregnant again and willing to try once more.
Be aware of the risks, but know in your heart if it is a risk worth taking. For me it is. It's a personal choice.
Best of luck what ever you decide.
