What is the difference between an Ultrasound, and are there levels, like level 1, and level 2-- what is the difference between them?
Also- I just found out I'm 5 months, and did a "quad" blood test. These results (as I were told) will help to determine if I should be advised to get an Amnio.
I am 36. I have the recent quad test and ultrasound test results reading scheduled for next week, monday 8/11. and later in the afternoon- I have an amnio scheduled in case we decide to go for that- based on results.
Please advise, I know that an amnio is risky- my testing window is very tiny as I've only very recently found out about my pregnancy and how far along I am.
Thanks for you input! Mic

2nd level ultrasound is a more detailed utrasound. i had mine last week and it took about 20 minutes. they would measure the baby and look for soft markers for abnormalities.

Hi. I had an amnio last Tuesday as a follow on from a Nuchal Scan and blood work. I'm 42 and 17wks pregnant. My earlier results put me at low risk but I went ahead with the amnio just to be 100% sure everything was fine. I'm almost phobic about needles but had to tell myself it wasn't about me anymore! I'm relieved to say that the thought was far worse that the procedure. There are risks but I used a very experienced private consultant which I think is as much to do with reducing risk as anything else. The only pain I felt was like an 'internal bee sting' and that was it! You will be scanned before, during and after the procedure to make sure the baby is fine. You may have some cramping a day or two after but I was lucky and didn't. The NHS results in the UK usually take 17 days to come back but given the difference in the babys development over this time, I paid for a private 48 hour return. I'm delighted to say everything came back clear and now I can bond with my baby and look forward to meeting her in 5 months. Good luck and I hope everything goes well.

When I went in for a "level 2" I was told by the tech that there is no difference in the equipment, but the techs are more experienced.

Hi micsmms3 what did you decide to do?? I just had my blood work and u/s and was told I have a 1 in 430 risk of Downs...? Considering the risk of miscarragie with amnio is 1% I opted to not have it done...Hope to hear from you.

Franny- Is that the 1st tri screening or 2nd Tri that you just had?

Hi clindholm, I guess that would be 2nd tri screening...? I was exactly 12 weeks when I had it done. I had nothing before. I am 36 years old. My doc measured the NT and took blood. She said that a normal DS rate for my age is 1 in 300, so I guess I am just a bit over what is expected for my age...

Ok, that's your first Trimester NT screen. You will have another Anatomy scan at 18-20 weeks where they will re-check for markers for Downs and Trisomy. I would not worry too much at this point. Remember these tests (especially AFP blood test) have high rates of false positives. I would not do an amnio either with the risk but you will have the option again if your risk at the 2nd screening comes up high. Personally, I think the stats on us "mature" moms is b__wn out of proportion. Colleen

Franny- sorry for the delay in my response! I did not have the Amnio. Felt the risk was too high, i was told 1 in 200 miscarry with the amnio. A greater risk than my ratios were... so I/ we felt comfortable just moving forward without the amnio.
