Hi Everyone.. I'm sure some of you read my other thread about my severe head pains and all of the doctors that I have been going to, well to update really quick on that- noone has a clue what is going on and now that I am 17 weeks they just put me on Lortab (Hydrocodone) for pain which basically just puts me to sleep. No answers yet.. however today my Perinatologist called me and told me that they got some of my blood work back and they found out that I have an issue with my blood clotting and that is why I have had previous miscarriages. They now want to put me on an anticoagulant called Lovenox and it is an injection! I am so upset- I have never had an issue like this and they said I will have to inject myself in the abdomin for the rest of the pregnancy! OUCH!!!! I am so scared. I go back to the Perinatologist on Tuesday so I can find out what the exact diagnosis is and I will keep you updated. Has anyone else been through this treatment and can you tell me anything about it- is it painful, any risks or side effects? Any advice or info would be very much appreciated! Thank You

now i'm kind of ignorant to that condition, but could you try baby aspirin or something like that before going to injections? or have the docs considered that already?

joeby321 - June 6

Hi Teddy,, I can't do baby aspirin because I am allergic to apirin but I am going to ask A LOT of questions before they start shooting me up with this stuff. I will keep you informed and thanks for answering.

I have had pretty bad migraines this pg. They gave me Fioricet, which helped a little but did nothing for the nausea that went along with it. They tried Midrin but that made things worse. They gave me Percocet but it's only for if NOTHING else works and I cannot function. So far, I've been able to handle things and make the migraines tolerable with Fioricet, Phenergan (for the nausea) and a cup of coke or coffee. As for injections, I've never had Lovenox or Heparin but I *did* do a cycle of injectables and you'll be surprised at what you're able to do when a baby is your goal. GL and I hope things get better for you soon.

I'm currently on Lovenox. After 4 m/c, I was diagnosed with compound hetero MTHFR gene mutation after the last one. I am currently 18 weeks pregnant and have been on Lovenox since week 6. I'm not sure which clotting issue you have but believe me, you're not alone. I actually asked to be on Lovenox because I didn't want to risk a 5th m/c and know that there was something else I could have tried. You're lucky you've gotten so far in your pregnancy and they caught it now! I do injections twice a day and while it's not fun, it's worth it if I am able to finally have a healthy baby. The only issues I've had so far is some bruising so just be sure to ice your injection site. Also, depending on what clotting issue you have, there's probably a forum out there that can help answer some of your questions. I found a forum on MTHFR and it helped me a lot. Goo luck!

Joey, I'm so sorry you are having all of these complications, but I just wanted to share that I have some suspected issues with clotting and after several losses, this pregnancy I was put on Lovenox and it was the best thing that ever happened. You MUST get on this asap because the blood volume will continue to increase and even one small clot hurt the baby. The shots are NOT bad at all! I knew each time I do a shot that I am helping to keep my baby going. It is a small needle and you pinch the fat/skin on your abdomen--i usually do it off to the sides in the lovehandle area and sometimes it stings a tiny bit, but overall it doesn't hurt at all. There is a possibility your headaches could be linked to the blood issues, so who knows if the shots might also help that. Don't be scared and know that there are lots of women going through the same thing. Good luck!!!

Oh goodness, thank you guys so much. I am definately feeling more at ease about everything reading that you guys are on it and it isn't that bad. I don't know what the exact diagnosis is yet, but will find everything out on Tuesday and then I will update you all again. Hopefully whatever this issue is hopefully it will help with the pain in my head and then I can finally start enjoying this pregnancy. Thank You again everyone and I will update all of you soon. Have a great day.

Joeby, haven't seen any posts from you in a few days. How are you feeling, any new news?

joeby321 - June 10

Hi JNFR- I am getting ready to go to the doctor at 3pm my time which is almost 2 hours. I am nervous as anything and even though I have gotten a lot of rea__surance about the Lovenox shots- I am so freaking out over them. I have prepared a whole list of questions to ask my doctors and if there is anything else I can do to avoid injections then I will. I am also scheduled today to have my first v____al ultrasound so I am not too thrilled about that (I have never had one before) they have been doing fine with the regular ultrasounds, seeing the baby, heartbeat and all that but now they say they have to check my cervix every 2 weeks, so v____al ultrasounds here we come! My head pains have still been as bad as ever but I am hanging in there and now my nerves are shot over these injections. So with all that I am preparing for my appointment and I will definately update you guys as soon as I get home. Wish me luck!!! Have a good day all and talk to you soon.

Hi Guys-- ok found out everything we needed to know. My diagnosis is compound hetero MTHFR and I have a protein S deficiency. Luckily the doctors that I see and the entire staff was very thorough in explaining everything and helped me a lot with the stress of the shots. Just as you all have advised.. the shot was not bad and really didn't hurt.. so I pysched myself out for nothing really. I will have to take the shots everyday only once a day so that is not bad. The v____al ultrasound was not bad and confirmed 100% we are having a boy!! I really hope things get better from this point on and I can start enjoying this pregnancy. I really appreciate you guys supporting me and giving me such great advice it has really been a huge help. I will keep you all updated and let me know how you all are doing as well. Thanks again and have a wonderful evening.

stefkay - June 11

joey, I'm glad they got you taken care of and that it wasn't as bad as you expected :) With those two issues (MTHFR and Protein S) you are SO lucky to have caught that now because they can cause 2nd trimester losses and later. Keep doing those shots as they are vital and CONGRAULATIONS on your baby boy!!!! :)

Welcome to the MTHFR club! And congratulations on having a boy! I find out Monday what we're having. I think it's a boy but who knows.

joeby321 - June 11

Thanks guys!! Hey Betty since you have the same thing, compound Hetero MTHFR do you know where I can find out some info about it? My family wants to find out some more info about it and I can't seem to find any good info regarding it. Any info would be great. Thanks all.

I got a fact sheet from my doctor...maybe yours has something similar? Also, there's actually a great mthfr thread under the miscarriage section of this forum. I know it's depressing to go there but that's how I found the site. But lots of people share what they've done and some explain it pretty well. To sum it up, we can't process folic acid the way we're supposed to so we will always need to take supplements. When pregnant, you need to take a lot more (approx 4mg) along with b6 and b12 because those help process the folic acid. I have a prescription that combines everything...Folgard. It's hereditary (sp?) and you have an increased risk for blood clots and stroke. Your parents and siblings might be interested in being tested just so they know and can take precautions. I think when you have both it means you got a copy from each parent but I'm not positive on that one. I see a perintologist and am going to a hemotologist as well. I hope this helps!
