Number Of Sonograms Ultrasounds

It seems to me when I read these threads that the women on there get scans every visit!!! I am currently 13 weeks, my dr did a va___al u/s at 7weeks 3days, and I won't have another one until we find out the s_x at 20 weeks. Is this normal? I feel everything is fine, but it's weird to me that everyone is having scans at every visit, and I will really only have two before my last month of pregnancy. Has anyone else just had the first scan and have to wait for the second around 20 weeks?!

It's actually different for each practice as well as each pregnancy. Complicated pregnancies will of course have more. In the state I live in, there is a 13 week NT, 18 week Anatomy and 33 week scan(which may vary by doctor). I have had more as some issues have come up along the way. You had a very early scan which many will not get unless they are having problems or cannot date their pregnancy. They really don't schedule them lightly since the machine is so expensive and in demand. Be glad if you have no issues that warrant extra scans!

I know I should be happy, but when we did get to see our baby, it was a bean! It was still a fetal pole. We got to see the hearbeat which was amazing, we were just hoping to see it more in baby form sooner than 20 weeks. I think the reason we had one early was because we had trouble conceiving and I hadn't had a normal cycle. It was probably to date the pregnancy. So we just had an earlier than 13 week scan and now we have to wait for the 20 week. It just seems like forever from now. I hate to be impatient, but I'm sure you know when you are in the early stages just barely to the 2nd trimester, you sometimes wonder, 'is there still really a baby growing inside of me?' I am overweight, so I am not showing pursay, but my husband and I can both feel my uterus expanding above my pubic bone. Like I said, I'm sure everything is fine, just wish we could see it more often! Thanks for your help!

I'm from washington and they normally only do 2 ultrasounds unless there is something wrong. Good luck on your pregnancy.

i live in the uk i had a dating scan at 10weeks, one at 14 weeks but i only had that one as i had my booking apponitment at the hospital and i have one at 19 weeks which is in 8 days time, i think i then get one arounf 30 weeks or something but i think my 14weeks scan was an accident as i think that was suposed to be my first scan as i filled in the paper work for which hospital i was suposed to give birth in so that was suposed to be my dating scan i think, also i had my 1st scan at a different hospital, i think most normoal pregnancys have around 2-3 scans

I live in Ohio. I've had two scans so far, we do one between 9-12 weeks. another at around 22-24 weeks for anatomy, and usually they schedule one more for around 35 weeks. I only got four scans with my daughter. One at a hospital, another to check her early on because of a previous miscarriage, and two more normal ones. I never got a 3rd trimester scan but I guess they didn't feel the need to.

I have had 3 scans in 4 months. The first to date the pregnancy, the second because I was bleeding and the 3rd because they could not find the heartbeat on the doppler at 15 weeks. I go for my next scan in 2 weeks to measure the baby and everything, I guess. This is my first and I have considered myself very lucky to have had 3 scans so far.

Im also in Ohio. At my ob they do an ultrasound to date the pregnancy after your 1st appt. Thet next ultrasound is then at 20 weeks for measure anatomy. If you chose to do 1st trimester screening, as i did, they do one at 12 weeks as well. The final ultrasound comes around the end of the eighth month to see how big the baby and to get an idea what to expect during delivery. So the standard pregnancy has 3 ultrasounds.

Newbaby, where in Ohio are you if I may ask? I live in the Reynoldsburg/Columbus area.

Hi Courtney, typically the first scan is done early on like when you had it. Then most docs use the doppler to hear heart beat at 12 weeks or scan. Then the anatomy scan around 18 - 20 weeks. Don't be afraid to call and ask for a scan, say you need it for rea__surance. I have had 6 scans so far (I am 14. weeks), grant it I have had 5 losses. But the doc really does them to rea__sure me baby is okay and of course to make sure baby is growing at the proper rate. But it is totally okay to ask for a scan, they are there to serve you and make you feel at ease. Good Luck.

Sounds normal to me. I live in PA and my doc is the same way. Had my first at 13 weeks only because she thought i was further along. will have my second at about 16 weeks to measure growth. I want more also. to see that little baby moving around at 13 weeks is so amazing. it looked like it was dancing and waving to us. Insurance also plays a big part in how many you get.

It seems to vary greatly from what I've read on this board from the doctor, standard in your area, and/or your pregnancy. Insurance should cover any ultrasound that is medically necessary but as always you should check with your insurance company to make sure. I had only had one ultrasound with my first pregnancy and that was at my first appointment when I was 10 weeks. I'm now 16 weeks into my second and again had the first scan which showed twins so I now have one at every visit. As mentioned in other posts, if you are concerned you can ask your doctor or even go and pay for one yourself. Even with the scan I get every month right now, I'm still always worried and do plan to pay for a 3d/4d in another month or so.
