Okay we're building a house and we have to stain all the window trim ourselves. I helped a bit last night and I wondered if this is not good for me? I had all the windows open. I could smell the stain but it didn't bother me really. I don't know if this is a smart idea or not. It's not easy so my hubby was having a hard time doing it and I used to stain at a job once so it's easier for me to do it but I don't want to harm the baby either. I'm only 17 wks along. Is there any danger in this if I keep all the windows open? Should I be wearing an air mask?

I am certainly no expert... I went to spray paint something the other day and it smelled so awful that I checkened out (but spray paint is a little different, I'd say). Why don't you at least go get one of those masks to wear? Apparently, a lot of women paint nursery when they are pg...

i have to do some painting as well, so called poison control to ask what is safe. They said stay well ventilated and to use latex paint if possible. If the smell bothers you, get out, even if it is latex paint, it's the fumes your most worried about.. and they said DON'T use paint thinner. i hope that helps. i don't really know what is in stain, so i can't tell you if it's bad or not.. but if you do it outside, and get a mask, you should be ok.

My doc called back. She said it was fine but to make sure it's well ventilated and to have a fan running in there while I'm working. I might get a mask just for extra precautions. When they were painting the house the smell never bothered me as all the windows and doors were open too. But I didn't help paint at the time.
