Ultrasound Negative At 6 8 Weeks

Would an abdominal (external) ultrasound possibly miss a pregnancy at somewhere between 6-8 weeks? I have been having spotting off and on and negative urine tests. I was hoping that an ultrasound would show either way if I was pregnant or not but the tech told me to come back in two weeks for a test and another ultrsound in a month... Could I still be pregnant? I'm having so many symptoms I can't see how it could be anything else! I need advice please
