Late Period, Brown Discharge And Negative Pregnancy Test.

Hi i'm 34 yrs old and according to my cycle i should of had my period this week. But last week i had cramping on first day and small amount of brown discharge for 4 days. Any ideas what other causes other than pregnancy could cause this. I'm going to make a doctors apointment this week. I had unprotected at the end of September. I took a pregnancy test today, first urine of the day and after my period was expected to start this week. So it shoud of picked up if i am pregnant. Any ideas ??
