Baby S Heart Rate Dropped

Hi ladies! Quick question: I had a follow-up ultrasound today at 28 weeks to make sure my placenta was moving up. The technician checked the heart rate which was 144. I didn't think about until later, but it has dropped at every appointment in the last few weeks. The baby's heart rate last week was 150 and the week before that 160. Why is the heart rate dropping and is this normal? Thanks for settling my worries!

As far as I know, as you get further along their heartrate does slow a little. Did they just check you with a doppler? Your babies heartrate will vary depending on their activity so it may be slower or faster depending on what they're doing.

Thanks for responding kay 101. The technician checked it using the probe with the ultrasound machine. I also know that baby was active at the tiime of the ultrasound which concerns me now. I wonder why the heart rate wasn't faster if the baby was active.

It's normal for them to have accelerations and decelerations when they're moving. If you do a non stress test, they monitor the babies heartrate for about half an hour and from that they're able to determine the babies base heart rate. It's normal with activity for the heartbeat to go 15 beats above or below the base heart rate. So say if your babies base heart rate is about 150, it's normal for them to pick up 135 or even 165. I've had mine checked with ultrasounds and they usually do it pretty quickly, so they wouldn't be able to tell you the base heartrate, just the heartrate at the time. If it was something like 100 then you'd have something to worry about.

Thanks again kay. You have helped put my mind at ease for the night. I worry over any little change. I love my baby so much and just everything to be okay. Once again, a big thank you!

carrieanne, kay101 is right. I have a doppler at home so I am able to check the heartrate for longer periods of time than they do in the doctor's office. Usually they just get it and give you the first number that comes up. In just a matter of seconds a baby's heartrate will go up and down a LOT! It's totally normal my dr. said. I've gotten 167 and 140 all within a minute with my little one. The nurse said the only concern is if it is below 120 consistently or above 180 (consistently). Your situation is totally normal!

my baby's HB was 170 at the 1st ultrasound, 160 at the second, and since then it has been between 140-150 on the doppler. fluxuations are perfectly normal!
