I'm at 31 weeks and I have a really bad cough. I was wondering if coughing so hard can affect the baby or possibly bring on early labour.

Do you have any other symptoms?, like fever or congestion? If you are concerned check in with your doc, it's a good idea anyway, they may want you to come in and check you out to eliminate more serious stuff than a cold or in the least tell you what is safe to treat it so you are not suffering. I can't say anything about delivering early due to a cough...I really don't know.

My chest is congested along with my sinus's . Although I can breath now through my nose. No fever though. This is the 2nd bad cold I've had in the past 3 weeks. Is that normal to be more susceptible to 'bugs' in the 3rd trimester? I checked with the OBGYN with the last cold and hot fluids was the recommendation. Maybe I'll check again and see what he says. Thanks.

Thanks. I'm glad you're feeling better. I'm going to call the OB today and see what he says. I just wanted to make sure that the excessive coughing doesn't affect the baby.

julie - you're more susceptible to bugs period while you're pregnant, as your immune system weakens some to prevent your body from rejecting the baby. That's why pregnant women are considered "high risk" for the flu.
gwennr - I've had a congested cough for quite a few weeks now due to allergies and colds. So far it hasn't shown any ill effects, and my midwives haven't been too concerned about it as long as it doesn't get chronic. If you're having difficulty breathing, pain, and/or blood with your cough though I would definitely suggest getting checked out ASAP by your doc.

Just be very careful. I was sick last month and i was almost 8 months along and i was coughing very hard for about 1 week. Well i had to be rushed to the emergency room because apparently i pulled a muscle by my ribcage from caughing so hard and the pressure of the baby against it was excrushiating!! I'm not saying that this will happen to you but just wanted to share my story. I had to stay in bed for 4 days and not move. I literally couldnt move or i would agravate the muscle. It was horrible!!!
