Hi girls. Got a question. I work full time for a company that generally has very good benefits, that is everything but paid maternity leave. My dh is disabled so he gets a small amount each month, which pretty much makes me the breadwinner in the family. I had been planning to get pregnant and was doing very well at saving all my sick/vacation time to pay for my time missed on maternity leave. I am quite high risk though (4 miscarriages and on lots of meds) and as a result have missed a few weeks here and there because of the doc taking me off work. I now am hoping to just take 4 weeks because I would only be short about a week and a half then.... but wondering if anyone knows anything about long term disability. My company does offer this, when I tried to ask my HR lady about it, she kept trying to stear me from this for some reason... and said I would have to be off for a long time to use this.... doesnt it usually take a month typically on this? And does anyone know if this is something that a person could qualify for while off on maternity leave? I know that no one can give me exact answers, but some kind of idea which direction to go now would be wonderful. Thank you!!

Every state has a different law on medical/maternity leave and the company you work for has to follow those rules. You can google it under the state you live in. I just typed in "Texas disability laws" and one of the first pages is usually a state government web-site. Sorry couldn't help more.

Thanks Sashasmama! I appreciate any help. I do want to also say that the long term disability I am referring to is through my work, it is a paid benefit that I have through them, but they do not offer short term at all.

Hopefully I can answer your question a little... I have been in the insurance business for many years. LTD usually doesn't kick in until like 12 weeks but it depends on how your policy is set up. Maternity isn't usually covered under LTD as it isn't a long term disability. It does however qualify for Short Term Disability as you are only "disabled" for a short term - 6 weeks with a v____al delivery or 8 weeks with a c-section. I hope that helps a little.

Doesn't your state offer short term disability? As Heather said, you should get 6-8 weeks plus two weeks off before your due date. But then again, I'm going by California. Don't know where you're from.

Hi there - I'm an October Mommy technically still in my 2nd trimester, but I'm poking around the 3rd trimester forum this morning. I live in Illinois - not sure if this is a state law or if it's a company regulation, but LTD won't kick in until you've utilized all your STD - in my case, I have up to 25 weeks of STD. After 25 weeks of continious STD, I am eligible for LTD. As Heather mentioned, maternity leave falls under STD and you're only awarded 6-8 weeks with a percentage of your salary. If there are complications, your doctor may require you to stay on STD for a little longer, however if you've been cleared to go back to work and you decide to "extend" your maternity leave, you can always take a Family Leave - but without any pay. The more vacation time you've got saved up the better - you can use this in conjunction with your STD and have more time at home with your little one. Hope this helps!
