Its pretty much what it says. It a bigg ball of " goo " that sits at the opening of your cervix to protect your placenta from germs and infections that may or could enter. It could come out weeks or days or even hours before you start labor. For me, it was 2 days. Its much different than your normal discharge. Its like a big ball of goo and sometimes has blood in it. When you lose this, for some people its the first sign of labor or that labor is nearing.

the mucous plug forms in the first trimester to protect the baby from anything that could go "up there", and is basically like a door on the hinges. When the baby goes head down and the pressure is put on your lower section, you may lose your mucous plug. It is called a "bloody show", and the best description of it is a v____al loogie with a bit of blood in it. The mucous plug discharges when your cervix thins out and/or starts dilating. It's nothing to worry about, but be sure to tell your doctor when it happens, as labor could be within the following two weeks.
