Amniotic Leak

Hello. I am 32 weeks and have noticed leaking since about 3 days ago. Day 1 was minimal and I didn't think anything of it (4th pregnancy). Day 2 I called the nurse, told her my symptoms and was told to go to Labor & Deliver for evaluation. The Dr. there took a culture and tested it, he said that it's "suspicious for amniotic fluid". He sent me home and he told me to come back in if I notice anymore. My ques: can he definitively tell me whether it is fluid or not?..."suspicious" just doesn't ease me at all. Baby is moving around a bit, but I'm still leaking. It is watery and has a sweet smell to it. I don't know what's considered a lot, but I've had to change pads every 4 hours approx. I don't want to go back to L&D if it's not needed. Hubby is deployed and it will be hard to find someone to look after my girls. I was hoping to wait until Monday to go back to L&D. How serious is it to wait 1 more day? Baby is moving, I feel fine, slight braxton hicks, but otherwise okay. I notice the leaking happens when I stand or get out of bed. Thanks!

MizzH... i think its very important that you be seen again... at 32 weeks the baby's lungs are not fully matured, so he/she would have to spend some time in the nicu... also... i have read that if you have an amniotic leak it leaves the oppurtunity for infections... to you or the baby... i really think you should call... especially because if this really is your water.. you still have 5 weeks before you're considered full term... and you want to avoid preterm labor if you can... i would really try to find someone to watch your girls.. so you can be seen... i'm pretty sure they can tell you 100% if its your amniotic fluid.... but i really think you need to go back as soon as possible... let us know what happens.. good luck!

Thanks. I was thinking the same. Still leaking the same amount and I'm pretty certain it's not urine or discharge. I think I'm going to have a friend go with me tomorrow morning to the hospital. This is my 4th baby, and still so many surprises. Thankfully, the baby is still moving around. I feel like my bump seems smaller and softer.....but, it could be all in my <paranoid> mind.

Since you're pretty sure that it's an amniotic leak, make sure you lay down as much as possible. I know it's hard having other kids there, but it's important to do in order to minimize fluid loss. Also yes, they can do a simple pH test on your fluid and see if it's urine, discharge, or amniotic fluid. Good luck!

Oh my gosh...I've noticed that the baby's movements have really decreased and not as powerful as before. I'm packing up, on my way to labor & delivery. I pray that everything turns out okay.

Well, it is amniotic fluid. My ultrasound indicated that my levels are still safe. They were going to induce me, but they're unsure whether or not the baby's lungs are mature enough. Since the leak is gradual and my levels are still okay, they want to monitor the amnio fluid everyday for the next week to determine the best course. The baby is moving again. It just doesn't feel the same (weaker). But, heartbeat is good, temp is good, so who knows. I feel like my bump is shrinking - ugh. I hope the baby can wait a few more weeks, but the Dr's say when the bag breaks, there is a high chance of going into labor within the week. Thanks, everyone for your support.

Oh my goodness- You will be in my thoughts. I hope your lo stays put for as long as possible. Will your DH be able to come back to be with you?

Mizz... i'm glad everything is okay right now... did they give you any steriod injections to mature the babies lungs? wow.. its crazy how pregnancy can change! your lo might be here any day now, and you werent planning on it for another 6-8 weeks! but on the bright side, other than a little bit of time in the nicu the baby will be fine... :) just keep your chin up... your dr will take care of you...

Good luck to you Mizz! Hold that baby in there!! Keep us updated.

MIZZ - Did the doctor put you on bedrest? Also, did they give you steroid injections to mature the lungs?

MizzH - January 13

I didn't get steroid injections, only a Rx to ward off infection. My hubby doesn't get back 'til Mar 1st (5 days before the due date). I really hope the baby can wait until then. I have confidence in my Dr. She was very thorough in all of our discussions. I think she'll help me make the right decision if it comes down to that. Thanks!

Mizz, please keep us updated.. i saw once on a pregnancy show, this ladys water broke at like 30 weeks or something.. and they kept her on hospital bedrest for 3 weeks and gave her steriod injections for the babies lungs... anyways... she delivered at 33 weeks.. and the dr said that the 3 weeks she gave the baby in the womb, was 6 weeks not in the nicu.... anyways, i dont know what all they can do when your water breaks or if you have a leak.. but i know its amazing what they can do...and i'm sure you'll be fine.. i hope that they can find a way to keep that baby in there til your hubby gets home... that must be so tough for you... just try to cross your legs really tight~ ;) but please do keep us posted...

Hun, please go back again and make sure you ask them if its amniotic fluid or not. I recently just gave birth a month ago and this happened to me. I had some fluid leakage and wasnt sure what it was. i had my doubts but i went to labor and deliver in case. The nurse checked me and a__sured me that most likely it wasnt since most people experience a huge gush, well she swabbed me and had tested in the lab, turned out to be amniotic fluid! they induced me that night. so to be safe, please go back and make sure they give you the answers you are looking for!
