so I have been baby sitting my cousins baby who is two months old and my cousin has her baby eating rice cereal. everyone I talk to and everything I read says that a 2 month old just cannot physically digest solids like that yet. my cousin told me to give her a bottle with 4oz water 3 and a half scoops of rice cereal and 2 scoops of formula that just seems odd to me. anyway I dont have any kids.. Im currently 34 weeks pregnant and just want opinions on this rice cereal thing. the baby doesn't poop well at all... she is always straining and I think its because she is trying to pass solids and such. any insight? I dont want to just go and change her diet but I think if its causing a physical problem I should talk to my cousin about it, anyone have any advice?

I have also heard not to give solids to a baby under 4-6 months old. It is kinda a wives tale in my opinion that giving a baby rice in their bottle will help them sleep, keep them fuller, etc. My pediatrician even said that allergies can result from giving solids too early. 2 months just seems awfully young to be giving even something as simple as rice cereal too. And you are too right about constipating the baby......

I don't have any kids myself but my Mom gave both me and my younger brother cereal when we were 2-3 months old... My brother just wans't getting full... We turned out fine... No food allergies or any allergies for that matter... We are both healthy with no medical problems....

I gave my 2nd son rice cereal very early on - otherwise he would never detach from my b___st - back in the day when I was little that's what my mom did to us....I won't tell you how early my son got his cereal if you think 2 months is too early...LOL he never got constipated that could be because I mixed the cereal with b___st milk -some babies are big and need more than formula and b___st milk can provide and a little cereal really doesn't hurt - I am sure someone will get on here and tell some horror story about what happened when they gave their baby cereal early but my experience was great and I won't hesitate to give her cereal if she needs it......giving a mixture of solids too early is what causes allergies - trying to give them fruits and veggies and stuff but something easily digested like rice cereal should not cause any problems at all Good luck

I would say if you aren't comfortable about how she chooses to feed her baby don't watch the baby or don't feed the baby cereal. The baby may not be constipated from the cereal, but from the iron in the formula. She may need to add less formula or more water to the bottle, docs say not to feed babys cereal and all this, but I have 4 very healthy children that I gave cereal and other foods to starting about 6 weeks. The baby should be fine!

heather that is way too early to be giving a baby rice cereal. I would really say something to her about it, people are going to do what they want. Not only is it bad for digestion but it can also put the baby at higher risk for food allergies. The longer you wait for feeding the baby solids the better it is. The baby needs the nutrients from the formula right now, not the rice cereal. I guessi just dont understand why do many people jump the gun on doing thing way too early for these little ones. The earliest that they should start getting rice cereal is four months. not only that but you arent suppose to feed a baby cereal from a bottle it can cause them to choke... but I do know alot of moms that do do it that way. Just because other people ended up just fine doesnt mean that every baby will be okay.

hey heather. i also gave all three of my babies rice cereal very early on. like around 6 weeks i started putting in a small amount of the rice cereal mixed with b___st milk into their nighttime bottles and it filled them up and they were able to rest and sleep better. my mom also did gave me and my brother rice cereal in our bottles and we too are fine. i've personally never heard of getting a food allergy due to giving a baby rice cereal which is very simple.
