Mucous Plug Poll

I forgot the gross part, lol... Second preg: Pea sized blob (sure there was more at some point, but didn't notice it) that looked like clearish yellow caulk. Third: Thin discharge, but when wiping it off it came off in yellowish strings, looked like snot. A couple days later lost little roundish pieces that looked like blobs of yellowish snot. One thing I noticed, is it can't easily be smeared, it either 'strings' or stay whole. Sorry, but you asked, lol!

I know this thread is disgusting to some, but let's face it, the MP itself if a disgusting subject. I just hate being pregnant and NOT knowing some things. It is the only time in a woman's life when they can tell their gyno that they have stabbing pains in their groin and it be TOTALLY NORMAL!!! How great is that? It's always hormones, ligaments, or just typical pregnancy. I know some topics are uncomfortable for people to talk about, but come on, how old are we here? Well, I want to thank you all for your updates (no matter how DISGUSTING). It is great to have this resource, especially when talking about stuff that docs hear about on a daily basis (well, my MP isn't something I PERSONALLY experience on a daily basis, not sure about the rest of you).

Lost mine at 36 weeks, and didn't deliver until 41 weeks.

I delivered at 38 weeks and never lost mine! I had increased discharge (sorry!) from about 36 weeks... ob said plug may dissolve over time rather than coming out in one go...

I have a good MP story! I went to the doctor for regular appointment in my 38th week, and it fell into the cup as I was taking my urine sample!!!! Yuck, Yuck!!! I was so embarressed about giving my cup to the nurse, but, of course, she wasn't bothered!!! That was about 9am and I had my son at 530pm that day. Oh, and my decription of the infamous MP, (as it floated in my urine mind you!)--it was a brownish, bloody streaked clump.

Im a 1st time mom and I have a question about the mucous plug.....this might sound stupid so pls forgive me (I dont have any clue) If you lost your mp does that mean your water breaks too? or it has nothing to do w/ the water breaking? Sorry.....kinda off topic but I just wanna know what to expect.

Your MP and your water breaking are unrelated. Basically, you might "lose" a clump of your cervix as you start to dilate. That's what the plug is, a "chunk of cervix", pleasant thought huh! So losing your MP just means that your cervix is starting to thin/dilate. However, when your water breaks your baby's sterile little home is disturbed and, I guess in most cases, labor is in your VERY near future.

Jen, I am pregnant with #4 and that is a funny but yes embaressing MP story! you must have wanted to just dump it and start over! And one correction..if any other poster that would like to add...The MP is not a "piece of your cervix" falling off. When you become pregnant your body produces this nice thick mucus to "plug" up the hole in your cervix to keep bacteria out and keep the baby in. At the end of your pregnancy as your body starts to get ready for labor, your cerix thins and softens, that thick plug begins to dislodge itself. It may fall out in big chunks and you will notice or it might just fall out in pieces and may never even notice it. But we all have a MP! That's my description...anyone can correct me if you think I may be wrong or have more to add. Good luck to all with labor...may it be easy and quick!

Take a stab on this one.....Do you lose your mp before your water breaks or either way? Meaning.....your water breaks but then you dont lose your mp yet? Which one? Sorry if this really sounds stupid....All my friends had c-sec so I can't really relate to them. Thanks for your advice. :)

My mom told me that she had started to leak fluid (at home) and never officially lost her MP until she got to the hospital. So, it is possible to have your water break before you lose your MP. It is also possible to lose it several weeks before delivery and have it regenerate....it is also possible to lose it early and still not go into labor for several weeks. Seems this old plug has a mind of its own. It comes out when it wants (typically a__sociated with dialation or effacement). Also seems that it can come out in pieces (and not as one big glob). So many inconsistencies. I guess this is why so few statistics exist out there for pregnant women. Thank you all for your posts. I'm sure that some people will find this post helpful (even those that find certain topics --- like to MP pics --- to be disgusting).

Just lost the plug....finally. I just went to the bathroom and walked out to the living room when I felt this warm gush of fluid...thought my water broke (leaking). When I went to the bathroom I knew it was the infamous mucous plug. Not really formed though...just a slimy discharge tinged with blood. So, considering that I am 2 days overdue, hopefully I'm FINALLY moving in the right direction.

Yeah for you Mandi! considering you started this thread..hopefully it won't be long for you! Please let us know how things turn out!

I aswell lost my MP after a membrane stripping, its not nice to see mine was really mucusy, but this is my 4th pregnancy and my 1st time loosing it. iam over due and juss cause you lost it doesnt mean that you will go into labour even tho i wish it was that way. I lost mine a week ago and iam still here 40+ weeks now,,,,yeahhh....good luck to all

Mandi - February 2

Still here, but I have more discharge today.....with blood. So I am keeping my fingers crossed that this baby will come without the need for induction.

MichelleB - February 2

I dont think I lost mine until my water broke. my water broke in the tub, and lets just say there was more than just fluid! Good luck all.
