my profession is photography, and i do a lot of maternity portraits. i usually get the expecting mother to come in at about 7 1/2 months. they all have that distinct "line" from their upper belly down toward their pelvic area. i am 8 months pregnant, and still dont have that line. what is it and why does everyone seem to have it but me? not that i am complaining, but just seems odd to me that it hasnt shown up yet??

"The dark line is called a "linea nigra" -- dark line! It is a common sign of pregnancy and usually happens only when the abdomen is somewhat distended. It is thought to be hormonally initiated and there is nothing anyone can do to get rid of it. Fair skinned women do not have this as often as women with darker pigmentation."
-I didn't get this line with my first pregnancy, and im 35 weeks with my second pregnancy and I don't have it either.
I think the line takes a long time to go away after you give birth too. If you get it that is. I say I'm lucky that I don't have it because to me it looks like stretch marks, and I am lucky enough not to have those either!

I'm not a fair skinned woman. Actually, I'm African American. I do have a very thin line, but it's not very dark at all. I have asked my doctor why it isn't darker, and he stated that the linea nigra doesn't always appear on all pregnant women. So if you don't get one, it's nothing to worry about.

I don't have any line at all. I was waiting to get it but haven't and I'm 38.3 weeks now. I am so glad it didn't show up. Guess we're lucky! :) As for stretch marks, well, I don't want to talk about those...

I didn't get the linea nigra with all 4 of my pregnancies. I have only gotten it 1 time and that was with my 2nd pregnancy. I guess I do have a very very faint line with this pregnancy so don't worry if you don't have one because it doesn't mean there is anything wrong.

I didn't have one with my first pregnancy and I just started to get one at 35 weeks with my second one. It is really light and it starts at my pubic bone and ends at my bellyb___ton.

Im 31.5 weeks and I have a very slight line about 2 inches long, right down the bottom of my belly. It´s really faint. I quite like it. I have no stretch marks though. not one :) (fingers crossed they don´t appear)

i'm brown, and i have one, not too dark, but not light either. and it doesn't bother me at all. i like it, its so about pregnancy.

Hi Denimbluez, I did not have a line with my 1st pregnancy and no line this time either. I am not vary fair I have brown hair and eyes. My sister had it with all 3, so did my mom. Just not meant to be I guess. Good news is, it has nothing to do with having a happy healthy baby! Good luck hon:)

I read that the linea nigra usually shows itself about 24 weeks - If you dont have it now i wouldnt worry. And to be honest, pregnancy is beautiful and everything but really it isnt the prettiest thing to develop. I am sure you wont miss not having it - I dont
