Myth Or Fact About Twins

Not likely at all -- because twins are a result of either the woman 1)releasing more than one egg per cycle, or 2)the egg splitting into two soon after fertilization. It's all about mom and/or her eggs -- sperm doesn't affect twinning rates.

hey, I was responding to the original post -- if your mother produced fraternal twins, your chances for twins should be considerably higher than the average woman. I'm almost 24 and am 25+ weeks pregnant with twins -- there is no family history that I am aware of.

Not at all. Twins have to do with the egg, not the sperm. Either the egg splits to make 2 babies ( identical) or there are 2 eggs that make two babies ( fraternal).

if there is twins in both sides of the family does that make it a higher chance of conceiving twins

If the father of my child is a twin and twins run on both sides of his family, what are my chances of having twins?

Twins rates are higher if...1) The mother has FRATERNAL twins on her side, thereby inheriting the gene to produce multiple eggs and....2) The Father has IDENTICAL twins on his side, thereby inheriting a certain protein in his sperm that will split the egg. Go to smartstork.com for more info.

if you have twins on your mother's side your chances ARe higher, but if it is you, your mother or grandmother who had twins or is a twin your chances go down to 1 in 17. If it is your Dad who has twins you can also inherit the gene to hyperovulate BUT it isn't as big a factor as if it is on your mother's side. As for the man(your dh) he can not pa__s fraternal twins on to you as he can't control how many eggs your will drop. Piedy is right that your dh can carry the enzyme that causes your egg to split thus causing id twins, but this is RARE that it actually happens!! conditions have to be just right....ie...you egg has to be conducive to the split. If this truly was a gene that was inheritable there would be WAY more id twins in the world...yet it has stayed constant to 1 in 250. There are actually more id twins from ivf than spontaneous. Smartstork needs to be up on the genetic research as genetisists are still saying have no idea why some eggs split and some don't depsite being exposed to enzyme by the father.

LOL...and a site that says that the male doesn't determine the gender of the baby needs to go back to basic biology....

From what I have read and researched, fraternal twins come from the mother, and identical twins come from the father.

actually id twins can come from the mother also. Researchers DON"T know why the egg splits and have seen it both on the moms and dad's side. I have 4 sets of id twins in my maternal side non on my dads or dh's.
