Hello All! I am new to the site, but really need some info. and support. I am 11.2 weeks pregnant. At 7.3 weeks our ultrasound showed twins!!! They both had a strong heartbeat (though one was slightly smaller than the other). After hearing the news, we were so excited, until our doctor told us not to tell many people we were having twins until our next ultrasound. This scared me and I began researching online and discovered that the occurence of vanishing twins is very high. I have not had any bleeding or cramping. Does anyone know the chances of continuing with a normal twin pregnancy after healthy hearbeats have been established early on?
Thanks
Betsy

There usually are no symptoms with vanishing twin at all. No bleeding or cramping. I had one at 11 weeks but I had bleeding (not common) which got me the u/s. If I didn't have that u/s, I would have never of known at my 20 week u/s that there used to be two. The chances of VTS happening in the 1st trimester is 25-29% for twins conceived naturally and they believe about a 50% chance for twins conceived through drugs that stimulate the ovaries. A twin pregnancy is high risk and unlike normal singletons where the risk of miscarriage drops after 14 weeks, twins risks don't drop until 20 weeks. It sounds scary but honestly, the odds are very much in your favor for a happy ending with two bundles of joy. Also, this worrying that you are going through won't stop. I was terrified until the day my two were born at 38 weeks and then new ones popped up!

We found out at 8 weeks that there were two. After having suffered a m/c a few months earlier, we were quite worried. My OB told us that the chance of losing one was 2% or less at that point. Congrats on your pregnancy!!
