My mothers brother and sister and also her great grandmother are twins. I was put on clomid by my doctor after 2 years of ttc #2. (concieved my son with no problem) What are my odds of having twins???? Has anyone had the same situation?

Someone has to have some kind of answer???? I knowt that it is like 1-10 for someone on clomid, so do I go to 1-5 for being over 30 and having an aunt and uncle that are twins???

You can google this info to get actual research, but natural occurrances of twins happens around 1 in 100 pregnancies. Not sure about odds with fertility drugs, althoug when my doc wanted to put me on clomid, I was worried about ending up on the cover of Time Magazine. He laughed and rea__sured me (this was in 1989) that clomid has only about a 2% twinning rate (in women who do not ovulate, mind you). Pergonal is the drug most responsible for multiples. If your mom has fraternal twins on her side, you may have an increased chance, as you would if you are an older mom (past 30) and have had subsequent pregnancies. I had a friend with secondary infertillity... conceived first son no problem.. then took clomid after 7 years of no luck conceiving a second. She only had one baby with clomid. I took clomid to conceive my first child... and only had one. Ironcially, my twins were not conceived on clomid, but maybe once my body figured out what it was supposed to do, it did it, overtime. who knows. Good luck!

From what I understand, it depends on why they put you on clomid. If you are not ovulating on your own, then your chance of having multiples is supposedly about 1 in 10. In my case, I ovulate, but I ovulate too late in my cycle which produces old eggs and have had multiple miscarriages and can also cause you to not be able to conceive at all. I was put on clomid 50mg just to make me ovulate at the right time to produce a healthier egg. I went in for u/s last week to check for ovulation on cd12 after completing my first round of clomid. I found out I am ovulating 4 eggs which could lead to quads!! Basically, if you are already ovulating, the clomid is going to tell your body to ovulate on top of that which will lead to more eggs. The four follicles that are ovulating this month for me are all developed at different stages within about 48 hours of each other. The Dr. can give an HCG shot to induce the ovulation for the mature follicles only and the ones that are not matured will dissolve, therefore giving me one or possibly two eggs. If you are trying to avoid having multiples, that could be an option for you. Hope this helps. Good luck. PitterPatterPrayers for you.

michele,
I'm curious about what your doctor told you that the hcg will dissolve the unmature eggs? My doctor told me that the ones that arent totally mature yet can still be viable. They could mature a day or two after the shots and since sperm can live a few days...... you can still get pregnant. Chances are low but my endocrinologist said nothing of dissolving follicles.
I was taking 100 mg's of clomid and got pregnant on my firts try with the hcg shots and IUI. Now Im just waiting to see how many of my 3 follicles took.
