Difference In Fetal Weights

I am 29 weeks pregnant with fraternal twins. I just came home from my 2nd level II sonogram. Everything seemed fine. One baby weighed 2lb 7 oz and the other weighted 2lb 12 lb. Does anyone know if this difference is normal? I am not seeing my doctor for another 2 weeks, so I just wanted to know if anyone knew the maximum weight difference that is normal. Thanks.

This doesn't seem abnormal. My twins were always at least 1/2lb apart in weight!

emunah - This seems perfectly normal. It was 2Ib 7oz and 2Ib 12oz right. I wouldn't be alarmed. If your doctor was concerned he would have said something. Good Luck!

i wouldnt worry. my twins were always 1lbs apart in measuring. but be aware that the measurements they give you arent always accurate... as the told me at 34 weeks the twins measured 7.5 lbs and 6.5 lbs but when they were born at 34w 1 day they actually weighed just 5lbs 13oz and 4lbs 7oz. i wouldnt worry though becuase your estimates seem great for your dates... my hospital must be crazy as they always measured higher than normal and their predicted weights were just insanely high! lol. good luck and congrats on the twins!!

Thanks everyone for your replies! Even though I am at 29 weeks, I am measuring at 36 weeks. How big am I going to get? I can't move!

Bad newws...you can always get bigger! At the end I was casting shadows over small children & I'm only 5' tall!

My ulttrasound technician determined the weights of my twins during a visit, come to find out she was wayyy off. My twins were actually only a few ounces apart.

My twins were estimated to be exactly the same all through my pregnancy and when they were born my son was a full pound heavier than my daughter. The ultrasounds are accurate, but they're not exact. My daughter was less than the estimated weight and my son was heavier.

Just a quick update. I saw my doctor and he informed me that it is considered normal for the babies to have a weight difference of up to 20%. Since mine was just over 10% he said it is fine.

i am about 27 weeks with twins and last week they saw that they are about 6 ounces difference in weights. my dr said that's not good and she wants me to come in next week for another ultrasound to see that the diference between them doesn't grow. she said a difference of over 7 ounces is bad. i don't know, i don't usually worry about this kind of stuff, but she kind of made me nervous! we'll see how things go next week.

Jenn95, are your twins identical? That could be why your doctor is watching you more closely. I believe weight difference is less of a concern with fraternal twins.

jenn95 - December 19

freebird, the dr said she doesn't know. they're both boys is all i know. how do you find out if they're identical or not? that would be so cool if they were. but sometimes they look alot alike even if they're fraternal. my sisinlaw has boy and girl fraternal and they look so alike (obviously you can see that 1s a boy and 1s a girl but they're so alike!) when and how did all of you find out if they were identical or fraternal?

the only way you can find out via ultrasound is if they both share a placenta, that means they definately are BUT idenitcal twins can also have seperate placentas as well. i supose there are tests in utero, maybe amnio? but after their birth you will find out :D i found out mine were identical at 13 weeks due to a shared placenta. i would ask your doctor or u/s technician about their placenta/s at your nect appointment. good luck and let us know!

freebird - December 19

Yep, basically what pink said. I was told that he only way to be sure of fraternals while in utero was if they were b/g. Even if they share a placenta it can be hard to tell because if 2 seperate placentas fuse it can look like one. After they're born you can see if they look alike and if they do you can have genetic testing done if you want to know for sure.

PS - that's probably why your doc is watching you closer because there's a chance your twins could be ID. I don't think they'd give you an amnio to find out since there are some risks a__sociated with the procedure. They'd only do that if it were medically called for. You'll find out when they're born, good luck!

Thanks for that info girls. i was wondering why my dr didn't know, i was like, isn't that your job- to know those kind of things?! i see on the ultrasound that the 2 babies are in 1 bag with a wall between them. i guess that could be either 2 placentas squished together or 1 with a wall in the middle, so i guess that's why she doesn't know. after birth i think it would also be difficult to know because fraternals can also look so alike. to emunah- i am also feeling huge, i was sitting in the car yesterday and i couldn't bend over to pick up something from the floor becasue my stomache was in the way! ugh!

In regards to the identical/fraternal factor, the only way to tell for sure is through DNA testing. I am also carrying 2 boys, 2 separate sacs and 2 placentas. According to the level II ultrasound technician (this did not come from my doctor), she claims that they are definately fraternal and not identical. I asked her how could she tell, and she said that she could see the positions of the placentas, that they are totally on different sides of the uterus. She said that if there was a chance they were identical, they would be much closer together. Again, this came from the sono tech, not my doctor, so I do not know if it is true or not. I guess we will find out eventually....
