What causes hormone level to drop during pregnancy with twins?

Is the hormone level your refering to the HCG level?
I was pregnant with twins,& when I was around my third month I started spotting.The Doctor said my HCG level was decreasing.
I ended up loosing one of the twins, but I carried the other one full term.
I had a healthy baby boy!
