i heard that you should take folic acid 3 months before pregnancy and during the first 3 months of pregnancy. im not planning now but if it was to happen by accident i would keep it. i was wondering if it would do me any harm to take extra folic acid as a supplement just to be on the safe side? it wouldnt do me any harm if i took it everyday and didn't get pregnant, right?

FOlic acid is never a bad thing to take. Be careful not to take too much - I dont know what too much is, but as with any vitamin supplement too much can be dangerous.

Folic acid is recommended to help prevent neural tube defects, but all the latest studies show, including China, Norway and the FDA, that it does not increase your chances of conceiving twins. If you are just wanting to take it to ensure that if a pregnancy should happen that you are giving your baby the best head start, just take a prenatal vitamin each day that has 400 mcg of folic acid (recommended dose) in it at least one month before you conceive since your baby's neural tube starts to develop 3 weeks after conception. Most women find out they are pregnant right around this time and then start their vitamins.

I did take folic acid, but not to increase my chances of multiples. They are less than a year old now.
