i had my first ultrasound at 5 weeks, then another at 12 weeks, both ultrasounds confirmed twins. then at 15 & 18 weeks the heartbeats were found and confirmed (at different rates). then I had an ultrasound at 19.5 weeks and the tech only saw one baby - he did not do a real thorough "search" i don't think, but I don't know what a 20 week ultrasound should look like - is it possible one was behind the other and didn't show up? if heartbeats were found at 18 weeks and now there is in fact only one - wouldn't I have had some sort of symptoms? I have no cramping or spotting at all. just hopeful that there are still 2....does anyone have any thoughts or ever experiences anything like this? thanks

My OB never used doppler for the h/b with my twins because she wanted to make she was in fact, getting seperate hear rates so it was an u/s at every visit. At my 20 week u/s, it would have been impossible for anyone not to notice more than 1 baby in there. I have no idea if one twin could be hiding behind the other, but at 20 weeks, the babies are big enough that the tech would have to be a complete idiot not to see two. I wish you the best and that all is well.

Is it possible that the tech didn't know you had a twin pregnancy? I know at my office I always had to tell them when i made the appontment so the tech would know. I also think it's unusual that they wouldn't see both babies even if they weren't looking for it, the 20 week u/s is a very thorough one. It's very possible not to have any symptoms with VTS. If I were in your situation I would call your OB and let them know what happened. Maybe they can schedule you another u/s so you can know for sure what's going on. Good luck!
