Baby Yanking On My Breast

My baby is 5 weeks old. Sometimes during feedings he gets upset and starts yanking on my nipple by throwing his head around like a tantrum. It seems like maybe the milk is not coming down fast enough for him, but I am not sure if that is the problem. Most of the time he does well during feedings, but lately this has been happening at least once a day. It is very frustrating and painful. Any advice?

Hi Jenn, my baby is 15 weeks old. He has been doing the same for a while. I think he gets impatient with the flow. Sometimes he is just too impatient or too agitaded to have a full meal. In the beginning when there is lots of milk he is fine, but after 5-10 mins he starts acting up. The good thing is that my nipples do not hurt as much as in the beginning -- he does it now more often. When he gets too fuzzy I just quit and give him a bottle with express milk. I am getting into the habit of expressing in the morning just in case I need.

I wonder if he's having a growth spurt. Maybe he is becoming impatient, like you said, because he's emptied that side. Have you tried offering the other side then when he does this?

It's funny I came across the same question I was going to ask. My son is seven weeks old and gets so angry when he's not getting what he wants. I thought maybe it was just him, but when I hear other little boys are doing it, I'm not as worried.

my son (9 w) does it too. i also think it is because 1. the milk is not coming fast enough 2. the b___st is empty. when i know that the b___st isn't empty yet, i just hold him more firm and start shushing, he then stops. but when the b___st is empty (no swallowing for a while = empty) i just offer him the other side. sometimes he yanks when he's half pa__sed out. then i take him off and he just sleeps - seems like he wants to get off the b___st but forgot that he needs to let go first :) but that happens only once in a while.

My daughter is three months old and when she starts to yank on my b___st, I just figure she is done and is playing. I just take her off and she doesn't seem to mind.
