My baby hasn't been able to latch on properly since I gave birth to him a week ago but I really want to br___tfeed him. So I started using a pump to express milk. My question is, I was able to feed him br___tmilk on the 6th day already. I heard that you start producing mature milk around the 3rd or 4th day. Is the milk I fed him still colostrum (since it was the first milk that came out, albeit on the 6th day) or is that already mature milk? It's a bit yellowish in color but thin, not thick. I'm just getting started but I pumped out about 5 oz since I started.

that isn't mature milk just yet. that is immature milk mitched in with colustrum. mature milk looks blueish, so you are doing well so far. how much milk are you able to pump? i was getting about 6 ounces a pump and now only getting 1 ounce ! not sure what the heck is going on :(

you will only get mature milk between the 10th-14th day. and from the day your milk comes in til then you get a mix(of colostrum and milk). These are really nutritious. Anne - don't worry abt it. milk usually evens out as your baby gets older. we wouldn't want to be engorged all the time with so much excess milk would we? just monitor your baby and if baby is thriving then you're doing fine.

thanks wondering. i read in several places that the more we empty our b___sts, the more milk we produce. the more engorged our b___sts are - the less we produce and the less we release. so i started pumping more frequently today and sure enough, i am getting more out. i hate pumpinggggg, but my daughter cant latch on, her mouth is way too small the hospital said. wonder if they were just lazy about it..

Anne - I've never heard of a baby's mouth being too small. I would think if you got a good technique of getting her on it would get easier. Besides, she's going to get big quickly!! My daughter had a hard time getting the hang of it and it did seem like it was too big for her to get in her mouth, but I saw a lactation consultant twice in the first few days and she got us feeding well. I would see a l.c. and also try only to pump right after you feed her, and b___stfeed every time she is hungry for as long as she wants. It's hard at first and you feel like all you do is b___stfeed, but once you get the hang of it it will be much easier than trying to pump all your milk out. A lot of women who try to only pump eventually lose all their milk anyway. Good luck, hang in there!
