I have the Medela Pump in Style. I am also a stay at home mom for my 4.5 month old Blake. I hardly use the PIS when I do it works great, but like I said I rarely use it. I have a one hand manual pump that the hospital gave me and it works wonderful. I would recommend not buying a pump until you see a need for one. Some women never need one and some have trouble in the beginning and have to exclusively pump for a while. Just wait and see :)

i am a stay at home mom and while i was nusring i only had the medela hand pump that was given to me at the hospital. since i was usually home that pump was all i really needed my husband still got to feed the baby sometimes whith the little bit i pumped and when we introduced formula also at the hospital i was given info on renting pumps (you had to purchase any thing that needed sterilized) it was only $1 or $2 a day and less by the week and month

You should wait until you need one. I am a stay at home mom and I have a pump that I have a hard time using. I just can't relax enough to collect any quantiy of milk. Don't get me wrong. I make tons of milk. So sometimes when my baby nurses and causes me to have let-down and then doesn't want to drink themilk that is leaking/spraying out, I get a cup and hand express some milk. I can get about 1oz per let-down. I usually can get 4oz a day then I just freeze it for later use. It lasts 6 months in the deep freeze.

Try to get one at the hospital at check out. I got a great pre-sterilized Medela Harmony that retails for $30. It works great. If you find you need a higher=level pump, invest later.

I would say it depends on whether your partner wants to play an active role in feeding or if he is willing to let you handle feeding time. Just because a pump is expensive doesn't mean it will work for you. The hospitals usually have a small variety you can try. My friend who pumps did not spend that much on her pump, and it works great for her. My aunt tried the same pump and didn't like it, but she didn't spend that much on the one she picked either. Shop around before you buy one if you do end up getting one.

I agree, wait to see if you need one. Some people try b___stfeeding and quit. I really think if I had been a stay at home mom I would not need a pump. I work so it's hard to say for sure. However, the Avent Isis has a good reputation, and it's fairly inexpensive. I don't like it as much as the Medela but if you are only pumping here and there I bet the Avent one would be just fine.
