I know this is probably a stupid question but how exactly do I know when one br___t is empty and time for me to swith to the next one? My daughter will nurse and nurse but I am worried I am being used for a pacifier, since she has a good latch but my nipples are very sore when she first latches on. I dont really feel a letdown but I believe its pretty quick since she starts the rapid swallowing after a couple minutes on the br___t. She is only a week old, doing great and gained 5 oz at her dr. appt yesterday. Thanks

i know when you pinch the areola its almost flat and my daughter gets fussy when theres not enough milk, they never get totally empty though, my midwfie says there is always milk, usually it takes a good hour to kind of empty and go onto next, she only usually needs the next in the morning as she sleeps 6-7 hours

From what I've read your b___st are never completly empty. It's normal for a newborn to continue to suck even if she is not really swallowing alot (using you as a pacifier). It is good for her to do that so you can establish a good supply. At that age I would let her nurse one one side for 15-20 at least then switch and do 15-20 again-if she wants it that long. Then start w/ the b___st you finished w/ for the next feeding. I am no expert though! Just what I've understood from my research. Kellymom.com has great b___stfeeding advice.

When you're engorged, your b___sts should feel very firm to the touch; when the b___st is drained, it becomes squishy again. Also, for the first 4 weeks or so, expect that your baby will be a very slow nurser; after all, (s)he is still learning how to do it, too. And, at this point, it's okay to be a pacifier - it will help to stimulate your milk production, and insure that you don't experience supply problems.

For the first few weeks my daughter would nurse for about 1 hour at a time! Then after about 1/2 hr she'd be ready all over again, now she only nurses for around 10-15 min every 2-3 hours. I dont think they ever empty out, I got worried one night I woke up to pump- I pump till no more comes out and as soon as I was done she woke up and I fed her and she definitally got milk. (I burped her and she threw up the excess) She always over eats then gets rid of the extra. I tell my hubby were in trouble she is already learning bad habbits joking that were raising a bulemic baby. (We are just joking dont take me seriously, I dont want nasty comments.) The soreness should start to taper off within the next week, They start to toughen up once the milk is in and in good production she will nurse for less time,.... until a growth spurt.
