Towards the end of the feed, how do you know if your baby is still suckling or is currently sucking (as in using you as a pacifier)? Now that Zein's not falling asleep during feeds, I can never tell when she's done!

My son normally makes a swallowing/gulp sound at first and once he's done making that noise I swich sides.

You can usually tell if they are still eating by watching their ears. They tend to swallow every few sucks which is a stronger jaw movement and wiggles their ears.

Thanks C and Jenn for responding, C, how about after you switch, when do you stop? Jenn, problem is, it all looks the same to me, unless she's at the beginning of the feed when she sucks pretty hard...Aaaaargh, I guess I'll just have to wing it!

Emma's 3.5 months old and using me as a pacifier a LOT! If she falls asleep while nursing she'll let go and later wake up rooting for it and will cry if she can't suckle. Ahhh!!!! I sat in the recliner all weekend nursing it seemed like!

I have always been told that the baby will come off the breat when he/she is full. My son will sometimes eat for 10 minutes and sometimes for 30. So I just let him tell me when he's done. If I take him off too soon he doesn't get enough of the "hindmilk" which is the more filling stuff. You can also check out the La Leche web site for good information. Good luck!!
