my bub is 12 days old today, she is in the special care unit at the hospital as she was born 7 weeks premature. i am expressing milk using a hand pump every 1-3 hours for bub and taking it up to the hospital for her a few times each day... my nipples ache for a little each hour or so and after a hot shower... why is this?

i think it's just your nipples getting used to the increased stimulation. hang in there and keep pumping. 7 wks? what happened? sorry don't mean to probe

the doctors have no explanation, labor just kicked in and they werent able to hold it off..

The ache is normal. If you were b___stfeeding your nipples would ache after each feeding until they get used to the extra stimulation. Ask if you can use nipple cream on them, I know the hospital gave me free samples of Lansinoh brand cream too use. It is just lanolin and doesn't have any additives but since your baby was premature make sure you ask your baby doctor about it before you use anything on them. Hope this helps.

they seem to ache about half an hour after i express until i express again.. does it mean my b___sts are more full and i should express more often, do you think? the ache goes away with a hot shower, though they feel quite warm most of the time. thanks for your answer.. i was pretty worried and thought maybe i should ask to see the lactation consultant again..?

I get that achy feeling when i let down. i know it sounds weird. that's how i can tell if i'm about to leak through my clothes. Also maybe the shower is letting your milk out ( warm does that)

try to keep soap off your nips when you shower, it could be irritaing them. a little b___stmilk rubbed into the nipples helped me a little and the cream Kare mentioned is awesome. this sounds funny but give it a try: fill a small bowl with warm salt water and soak your nipples for a minute or so. feels great!
